James Gunn clarifies that only films from Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy are canon in the DC Universe (DCU), causing confusion among fans.
Xolo Maridueña, Viola Davis, and John Cena have been officially announced to return in the DCU reboot, while the status of other actors' reprisals remains uncertain. The list of returning actors is subject to change as negotiations are still ongoing, and the official confirmation of their participation may be delayed due to the actors' strike.
James Gunn has been actively addressing misconceptions about his upcoming reboot plans for the DC Universe (DCU) on social media for the past two days. In his most recent update, Gunn revealed that there is another DCEU actor who will be making a comeback in the DCU, in addition to the three he had already mentioned.
Yesterday, Gunn used Threads to respond to fan queries regarding which films and characters are considered canon in the DC Universe, among other topics. He clarified that anything preceding Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy is not considered part of the DCU canon. Furthermore, Gunn confirmed that Xolo Maridueña will continue his portrayal of Blue Beetle, Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller, and John Cena will remain as Peacemaker.
Later on Threads, a fan asked Gunn if Freddie Stroma would reprise his role as Vigilante. "Yes, Freddie as Vigilante is still in the picture," replied Gunn. Currently, no additional actors have been confirmed to return, but it seems that most of the actors from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad will make a comeback. However, based on Gunn's previous remarks, neither Peacemaker nor The Suicide Squad is considered canon. This is likely to further perplex and enrage fans regarding the soft DCU reboot.
Please note that the list mentioned yesterday is not final, as there may be other returning actors, including Stroma's Vigilante, that fans are not aware of yet. Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn are notably absent and their return is uncertain. Notably, Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman are being replaced by Gunn. It is likely that Gunn does not want to provide an exhaustive list of actors in the DCU, especially considering the ongoing actors' strike, which suggests that negotiations with actors are still in progress. Fans will need to wait until after the strike to find out which actors will be returning. Fortunately, the end of the writers' strike suggests that the actors' strike might conclude soon.
Tracking which actors will return may be perplexing, but Gunn reassured fans that it is acceptable to endure confusion regarding the definition of DCU canon. This confusion arises because no content from the shared universe has been witnessed by fans thus far. However, with the imminent release of the DC Universe's inaugural projects, an official establishment of what is considered canon will soon emerge.
