James Gunn, co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios, recently commented on the possibility of Margot Robbie returning to the role of Harley Quinn. Robbie initially played the character in 2016's Suicide Squad and later starred in the spin-off film Birds of Prey in 2020.
The 2021 film The Suicide Squad, written and directed by Gunn, followed Birds of Prey. While it serves as a standalone sequel, it reunited Robbie with several of her original co-stars from Suicide Squad. Since then, Gunn and producer Peter Safran have taken over DC Studios, leading to revamping and recasting in the DCU, casting doubt on Robbie's return.
James Gunn addresses Margot Robbie’s future as Harley Quinn in DCU
However, Gunn recently hinted that Robbie may have the opportunity to return to the DC Universe in a post on Threads. The filmmaker, who is now a studio mogul, stated that there are currently no intentions to find a replacement for Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn in the DC Universe.
James Gunn expressed that he has not had recent discussions with Margot Robbie about Harley Quinn, but he would be delighted to have her return as Harley or in a different role. He also shared that there are currently no plans for any other actor to portray Harley in the DCU.
Gunn wrote that he hasn't discussed Harley with Margot for a while, but would be interested in working with her again as Harley or in another role. He mentioned that there are currently no plans for anyone else to play Harley, aside from in Todd's movie or the animated show/s.
The "Todd" mentioned by Gunn is Todd Phillips, director of the Joker movie. His upcoming project, Folie à Deux, features Lady Gaga as Harley. However, Gunn previously explained that the Joker movies, along with The Batman and its sequel, exist in their own separate continuities.
Is Margot Robbie done playing Harley Quinn?
Gunn’s Threads post also acknowledges the popular Harley Quinn animated adult comedy, featuring Kaley Cuoco as the madcap antihero. However, this series – now in its fifth season – is not officially part of the DC Universe.
Robbie herself is not actively advocating for another Harley Quinn movie. In fact, the Australian actor indicated in a recent Variety interview that she is finished with the role. "I always envisioned Harley being a character that would be handed off to other actresses to portray," Robbie stated. "Just like there are many iconic male characters. That was always the goal for her."
Harley is incredibly entertaining and versatile. When you pass her off to someone else, the possibilities are endless. Check out Dexerto for all the latest DCU news and updates.

As a hard fan of Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn, I am thrilled to hear that James Gunn is open to the possibility of her continuing in the role within the DC Universe. Robbie's Harley Quinn is a beloved and iconic character, and it would be a shame to see her go. I believe that she brings a unique energy and charisma to the role that no other actress could replicate. I hope that Gunn and Robbie can come to an agreement that allows her to continue playing Harley Quinn in future DCU projects.
However, I also understand Robbie's desire to move on from the role and explore other opportunities. She is a talented actress with a wide range of skills, and I am excited to see what she does next. I believe that she will continue to be successful in whatever she chooses to do, and I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
