Erik ten Hag has justified his strict disciplinary actions at Manchester United following a tumultuous two weeks. The Dutchman claims that the club lacked a positive culture prior to his arrival last year.
In the period since United's last match against Arsenal on September 3, Jadon Sancho has been instructed to train separately from the first team due to his outspoken criticism of Ten Hag. Additionally, Antony has postponed his return to training after the international break due to allegations of assault.
Ten Hag insists that Sancho must apologize to both him and the club in order to regain his place in the United squad. Sancho, on the other hand, remains steadfast in his refusal to meet Ten Hag's apology requirement, asserting that he did nothing wrong by addressing the criticism publicly, as it seemed to undermine his professionalism.
During his pre-match press conference for the United vs. Brighton game on Saturday, Ten Hag emphasized the significance of effectively managing the diverse personalities within the squad. He clarified that no severe consequences are imposed for a single mistake, stressing the priority of team cohesion and unity above all else.
Within the team, individuals assume their respective roles while showcasing their unique attributes. Various characters compose the team, necessitating efficient management. Nevertheless, the team's unity always takes precedence.
Due to the lack of a favorable culture prior to my arrival last season, the club entrusted me with the responsibility of establishing certain norms. Consequently, it falls upon me to oversee and enforce these standards.
Ten Hag is open to private discussions with players regarding his decisions, but expects them to refrain from publicly criticizing him or the club, or expressing their frustrations.
Sancho's associates assert that he has been treated unjustly and that there has been an inconsistent enforcement of rules within the club, favoring certain members of the team.
On the contrary, United argues that Ten Hag has applied disciplinary measures without discrimination, sanctioning players like Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Alejandro Garnacho whenever they have violated the required rules or standards.
United's lack of options on the right wing is evident due to the absences of Sancho and Antony. The remaining wide options are Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri, and Marcus Rashford. Additionally, Bruno Fernandes can also play on the left. Ten Hag expressed confidence in the team's strength, spirit, and mood, emphasizing the motivation of the available players despite setbacks such as injuries or other reasons for unavailability.
Asked when he expects to see Antony back at United, Ten Hag said: "No idea. Of course, he's disappointed but he is ok."
'Maguire treatment is crazy - he has to block it out'
Ten Hag also came to the defense of defender Harry Maguire, who faced criticism last week during his time with the England national team.
Maguire, the central defender, faced jeers from the crowd every time he touched the ball in Tuesday night's friendly match against Scotland, and later scored an own goal in the second half. England manager Gareth Southgate attributed the treatment Maguire received to "people in our own country" and called it an "absolute joke".
Maguire, having been subjected to similar jeering from Arsenal supporters in his previous Premier League match, asserts his ability to withstand the pressure. However, his mother took to social media to express that the mistreatment extended beyond the realm of football.
When questioned about Maguire's mistreatment, Ten Hag commented, "I have repeatedly stated that it is disrespectful. He should not have to endure this. It is absurd, but unfortunately, this is the way things are. Harry must counteract this through his performances."
What Ten Hag and Sancho said about each other
"When examining his career, it becomes evident that he has achieved remarkable success. He possesses a multitude of opportunities ahead, but it is imperative for him to secure them through stellar performances," Ten Hag explained in regards to Sancho's absence from the squad against Arsenal.Sancho issued a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, addressing Ten Hag's comments in the post-match press conference: "Please refrain from believing everything you come across in the media!"
I won't tolerate false accusations. I have performed excellently during my training this week.
I believe there are additional factors involved in this situation that I won't delve into. I have been unfairly blamed for a considerable period of time!
"All I want to do is to play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team."
Sancho has since deleted his social media post on X.
