Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are excited to bring The Karate Kid to a new generation.
"Hey everyone, we've got some exciting news!" Chan, 69, shared in a recent YouTube announcement. Macchio, 62, added, "We'll be appearing in a new Karate Kid film together."
Chan pointed out that the collaboration of the duo is significant news in itself, but the actors had another unexpected announcement. "We're searching for the next Karate Kid!" exclaimed Chan before Macchio shared more information. "That's correct - the worldwide search for the lead role in our new film has officially begun," Macchio revealed. "So, let's all get ready to start the search."
Macchio quoted the famous line from Mr. Miyagi (played by the late Pat Morita) in the franchise’s first film. In response, Chan shared a line from his character, Mr. Han, in the 2010 movie, The Karate Kid. "You mean, 'Jacket on, jacket off, hang it up,'" he quipped.
The actors expressed their excitement for the new film and announced that fans can submit their audition videos through the movie’s casting website, despite their Karate Kid characters never having met in the films.
Limited information has been disclosed about the project, but it is set to be released in theaters on December 13, 2024.
In the original 1984 action film, Macchio portrayed the character Daniel LaRusso, who enrolled in martial arts classes to deal with bullies. Along with mastering karate, Daniel also gained valuable life lessons from Miyagi that impacted him beyond his fights.
Chan portrayed the role of martial arts instructor Mr. Han in the 2010 franchise reboot, with Jaden Smith starring as the titular kid. Smith's character, Dre Parker, relocates from America to China, where he is mentored by Mr. Han as he adjusts to his new life.
In 2018, Macchio returned as Daniel in the Emmy-nominated series Cobra Kai. The show is set many years after the original film and rekindles the rivalry between Macchio's Daniel and his nemesis Johnny Lawrence, portrayed by William Zabka in both projects.
Netflix announced earlier this year that the sixth season of Cobra Kai will be its last. The production of the final season was delayed because of the strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA, which concluded in July and November, respectively.

Before Cobra Kai was officially renewed for its final season, Macchio teased to We what season 6 could possibly entail.
“There is a lot of potential for further development. It needs to be engaging and authentic, and I believe there are many avenues to explore each season,” Macchio commented. "Whether you introduce Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko in season 5 or Elizabeth Shue in season 3. You also have Thomas Ian Griffith who is doing an excellent job."
