Jack Black, the voice actor for Bowser, envisions Super Mario Bros. 2 as a complete musical titled "Bowser's Revenge." Following the successful release of the animated Super Mario Bros. movie in early 2023, a sequel is now officially in development after its box office success.
Although some fans were critical of certain casting choices, such as Chris Pratt as Mario, others who watched the film found other characters to love. Jack Black's portrayal of Bowser was particularly popular, with the song he performed in the movie becoming a viral sensation on social media for months after the film's release in theaters.
During a recent interview with Variety, Black shared his enthusiasm for composing music for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie and revealed details about the creative process involved.
"I prefer to keep my music and movies separate, unless it was agreed upon from the start," Black explained.
I'm very protective of my career with Tenacious D. They gave me a 30-second idea that was hilarious. I expanded on it, added lyrics and melody, and they loved it. They even included it in the film, which I couldn't believe. I'd love to see the sequel become a full-blown musical movie, similar to the direction Joker 2 is taking by developing something entirely new from the original film.
"I believe it should be a complete musical, similar to the direction Todd Phillips is reportedly taking with 'Joker 2.' The actor also suggested that the movie should be titled 'Bowser's Revenge.' As a Gen Z fan, I am thrilled about the possibility of a Super Mario Bros. 2 movie being a full-fledged musical. Jack Black's portrayal of Bowser in the first movie was hilarious and his musical talent is undeniable. I can't wait to see what he and the rest of the cast can do in a full-length musical.
I also appreciate Black's dedication to his music career and his desire to keep his music and movies separate. It shows that he takes both his music and acting seriously and wants to make sure that each project is the best it can be. I think it's great that he was able to collaborate with the filmmakers to create a song for the first movie and I hope he has even more creative input in the sequel.
