Italian PM Giorgia Meloni ends relationship with TV journalist partner Andrea Giambruno due to his controversial sexist remarks, sparking public criticism

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Friday that she has ended her relationship with television journalist Andrea Giambruno. Giambruno has faced backlash in recent weeks for making sexist remarks both on and off air. Taking to her social media accounts, Meloni expressed that their paths have been growing apart for some time, leading to this decision.

The couple has a daughter who is seven years old.

Giambruno presents a news program that is broadcasted by Mediaset, which is a part of the MFE (MFEB.MI) media group. This media group is owned by the heirs of the late Silvio Berlusconi, who was the former prime minister and an ally of Meloni.

Italy's PM Meloni champions 'family values.' But critics say she's doing little to protect women from violence

He expressed, "I wish I had met you earlier," to his female colleague, as revealed in off-air excerpts of Giambruno's show broadcasted on two occasions this week by another Mediaset program. In addition, he was heard using offensive language.

In the second recording, which was aired on Thursday, Giambruno can be heard bragging about an affair and offering female colleagues job opportunities if they participate in group sex. This TV journalist had faced significant backlash in August for his victim-blaming remarks regarding a gang rape case.

During her program, Meloni addressed the topic of going dancing and stated that individuals have the freedom to consume alcohol without any misunderstandings or issues arising. She emphasized that by refraining from excessive drinking and staying alert, one can possibly prevent encountering certain problems or encountering an unpleasant person. Following the incident, Meloni asserted that she should not be held accountable for her partner's remarks and declared her decision to refuse addressing any inquiries regarding his actions in the future.
