David Robert Mitchell, after more than a decade, is finally able to create his much-anticipated sequel to the successful horror film It Follows. The upcoming movie, titled They Follow, is being co-produced by Tom Quinn's Neon studios (known for Parasite), as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The filming is set to commence next year.
They Follow will once again feature Maika Monroe as the lead character, Jay Height, who played a significant role in the 2014 film. Following her first intimate encounter with her boyfriend, Jay discovers that she is now being pursued by a malevolent entity. To temporarily evade this menacing presence, she must pass it on to someone else. Throughout the movie, the entity takes on various disturbing forms, including a tall, pale man without eyes and a screaming elderly woman.
Content It Follows was a surprise success, earning a global total of $21.9 million despite its modest budget of around $1 million. There have been talks of a sequel for several years, with Neon's Quinn proposing in 2015 that it could focus on individuals actively pursuing and tracking down the entity to its origin.
During that time, Mitchell stated that the entity did not have a detailed backstory. "I personally don't find myself intrigued by the origins of 'it'," he explained. "For me, it's more about the logic of a dream, where they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish situation that can't be resolved, no matter how hard they try."
No concrete plot details of They Follow have been announced, or additional cast outside of Monroe.
Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan of the original "It Follows," I am thrilled to hear about the long-awaited sequel, "They Follow." The first film was a masterclass in horror, with its unique and terrifying concept, and I can't wait to see what David Robert Mitchell has in store for us this time around.
Maika Monroe's return as Jay Height is also very exciting, as she was one of the best things about the original film. Her performance was incredibly nuanced and believable, and I'm sure she'll bring the same level of intensity to the sequel.
Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic about "They Follow." The original film set a high bar, but I have faith that Mitchell and Monroe can deliver another terrifying and thought-provoking horror film. I can't wait to see it when it hits theaters next year.
