However, there is some positive news in store as a sequel series is in the works, and it's expected that McConaughey will take on the lead role. Originally planned for a premiere in December 2023, there may be a delay due to ongoing strikes involving the writers and actors. Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, expressed confidence in the sequel, stating that Yellowstone has been the foundation for a successful universe of global hits and that the sequel, thanks to the talented Taylor Sheridan and our amazing cast, will be another huge success.
David Glasser, the CEO of 101 Studios, also expressed enthusiasm for the continuation of the Dutton story. He stated that the new journey would pick up where Yellowstone leaves off, promising another epic tale that will captivate audiences worldwide.
The show's midseason break came with the arrival of Episode 8 from the fifth season on New Year's Day. The highly anticipated Episode 9 is slated for release in November this year.
During Deadline's Contenders Television panel on April 16, 2023, he expressed, "Taylor [Sheridan] is currently in Texas transforming ordinary material into something extraordinary, and we are eagerly anticipating its completion. The enthusiasm is palpable among everyone involved."
This follows several rumors surrounding the show's possible conclusion. According to a previous article by The Hollywood Reporter, Costner has declined to dedicate more than a week to completing the season due to his involvement in his four-part Western epic Horizon.
"The second half of Yellowstone's season was scheduled to start filming in March, but sources inform The Hollywood Reporter that meeting that deadline is becoming increasingly uncertain," the report stated.
“The surprising conflict presents the potential that the TV's most popular drama may come to an untimely conclusion. (Insiders affirm that the series will not abruptly conclude should Costner depart.)”

McConaughey's name was recently introduced as a potential replacement for Costner or as the main character in a new show that would fill the void left by Yellowstone. An example of this is the spinoff titled 6666, created by Taylor Sheridan, which is set on the iconic Texas ranch and seems to be a suitable continuation of the original series. However, shortly after, Costner's lawyer Marty Singer refuted the rumors, stating that the claim that Costner would only be available for one week of filming in the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is completely false.
