Is there a post-credits scene in The Boy and the Heron, the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli? While Disney may dominate movie animation, Studio Ghibli has been a leading force in the industry since 1984, with acclaimed titles such as My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.
The release of The Boy and the Heron, previously thought to be Miyazaki's last film (we were clearly mistaken), has once again proven to be a success. Following its overwhelming praise in Japan, it is expected to surpass Godzilla Minus One at the US box office this weekend.
As eager fans head to theaters to see the film, many will inevitably wonder (thanks to the Marvel phenomenon) if there's a post-credits scene. Here's what you need to know.
Is there a post-credits scene in The Boy and the Heron?
No, there isn’t a post-credits scene in The Boy and the Heron.
In the past, audiences would patiently sit through the credits to appreciate the musical closing and acknowledge the effort of the countless individuals who contributed to the film. Occasionally, there would be a fun surprise at the end, such as Ferris Bueller's quirky sign-off. However, with the introduction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its post-credits teases, it has created a sense of obligatory anticipation for moviegoers, leaving them to wonder if there is a post-credits scene for any other film they watch.
Similar to other Studio Ghibli films, there are no scenes after the credits in The Boy and the Heron (there have been rumors of a "phantom ending" to Spirited Away, but no evidence has ever been posted online).
In our assessment of the new film, we stated: "If Hayao Miyazaki had a film equivalent of a Greatest Hits album, it would be The Boy and the Heron… even when he isn't at his best, his movies are still outstanding in their own way, never leaning towards being awful."

As a passionate fan of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's work, I was eagerly anticipating the release of The Boy and the Heron. While I was thrilled to hear about its success in Japan and its potential to surpass Godzilla Minus One at the US box office, I was slightly disappointed to learn that there isn't a post-credits scene. I have grown accustomed to the exciting tradition of post-credits scenes, especially with Marvel movies, and I had hoped that Studio Ghibli might surprise us with something similar. Nevertheless, I understand that Studio Ghibli films are known for their artistic integrity and focus on storytelling rather than commercial gimmicks.
Despite the lack of a post-credits scene, I am confident that The Boy and the Heron will be a captivating and heartwarming experience. Studio Ghibli has a proven track record of creating visually stunning and emotionally resonant films, and I have no doubt that this latest offering will be another masterpiece. I am excited to immerse myself in the world of The Boy and the Heron and to be transported by Miyazaki's magical storytelling.
