The Season 7 finale of Rick and Morty is here, and fans are already asking: what about Season 8? Here's what we know about the upcoming season. The latest season brought even more interdimensional chaos, including the dark plot of "suicide spaghetti" in Episode 4 and the canonical event in Episode 5 that resulted in the death of Rick Prime and the return of Evil Morty.
The most recent chapter signified the conclusion of an era and the start of a new one, with new actors voicing the titular characters and others following the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland. Will the franchise continue without Roiland? Here's everything you should know about Rick and Morty Season 8.
Will there be a Rick and Morty Season 8?
Yes, Adult Swim has locked Rick and Morty in for at least 10 seasons, meaning Season 8 will definitely be going ahead.
The Season 7 blurb hinted at the show's future, suggesting that 'Rick and Morty' will last for at least 100 years or until season 10. During a recent interview with The Verge, Harmon hinted at big things to come in the next installment, stating that Season 7 is just one step on the road, and Season 8, which is already written, will be even more significant.
Is there a Rick and Morty Season 8 release date?
"It will be a nostalgic return to our original style, with a sense of 'we're back, baby' excitement, and hopefully, Season 9 will capture that even more so. This gradual process has been about regaining our momentum and finding our groove again."
Rick and Morty’s next season does not have an official release date yet, but the writing team has completed the scripts for Season 8. If the pattern from previous seasons holds, fans can anticipate Season 8 to premiere in late 2024. The show has had significant gaps between seasons in the past, including a nearly two-year hiatus between Seasons 2 and 3 as well as between Seasons 3 and 4, along with midseason breaks.
In recent years, there has been a change in the usual pattern. Season 7 did not have any midseason gaps and premiered just one year and one month after the first episode of Season 6. It seems that Season 8 will follow this same pattern, considering that the writing is completed.
Beth voice actor Sarah Chalke recently mentioned in a conversation with Screenrant that "Season 8 is written, but we haven't read them yet, we just get them a little bit before."
Rick and Morty Season 8 cast: Who’ll be in it?
Although an official cast list is yet to be finalized, we can expect the following voice actors to return:
Ian Cardoni as Rick Sanchez
Harry Belden as Morty Smith
Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith
Sarah Chalke as Beth Smith and Space Beth
Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith
John Allen as Mr Poopybutthole
Dan Harmon as Bird Person
Tom Kenny as Squanchy
In Season 7, Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden took on the roles of the new voice actors for Rick and Morty. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cardoni expressed, "I remember getting the call from my agents, and my wife was there, thankfully, to make sure I didn’t fall over. It was a thrilling moment, a dream come true as an actor and as a fan." Their debut as the iconic characters was a significant moment for them.
On October 16, 2023, Belden expressed his excitement, stating "This is a literal dream come true. I'm pretty sure I had this dream at one point in my life to do this show. As soon as they told me, my girlfriend was completely sobbing. Then seeing her crying was like, 'Oh, this is real, I heard them correctly.'"
Rick and Morty Season 8 plot: What might it be about?
Beth Chalke is eagerly anticipating what the team has planned for the future: "We receive the scripts as we progress, and it's always exciting to discover what's in store for our characters. I thoroughly enjoy every recording session," she expressed. "I'm fully supportive of whichever direction Beth or Space Beth's story takes."
The endless possibilities of Rick and Morty's ever-changing plot make it unpredictable what topics will be explored in Season 8. With Rick C-137 finally avenging and killing Rick Prime in Season 7, we may see him coping with the consequences, including the tragic realization that it didn't bring his wife Diane back.
There is potential for another Evil Morty episode, as he escaped with the Omega Device in Episode 5, capable of wiping out all versions of its target. Additionally, Mr. Poopybutthole's return in Episode 1 was not well-received, but the post-credits scene of the Season 7 finale hinted at more of his story to come, potentially in Season 8.

Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z netizen, I am eagerly anticipating the release of Rick and Morty Season 8. The show has been a staple of my entertainment diet for years, and I can't wait to see what the creative team has in store for us next. I'm particularly excited about the promise of a "nostalgic return" to the show's original style, as I feel like the recent seasons have strayed a bit too far from what made the show so great in the first place. I'm also curious to see how the show will handle the departure of Justin Roiland, who was the co-creator and voice of Rick and Morty. I have faith that the new voice actors will do a great job, but it will definitely be strange to hear someone else voicing these iconic characters.
Overall, I am very optimistic about the future of Rick and Morty. The show has a strong fan base, and the creative team seems to be committed to making the best possible show they can. I can't wait to see what Season 8 has in store!
