Is an R-rated Version of Five Nights at Freddy’s in the Works?

Director Emma Tammi discusses the possibility of an R-rated version for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, adding intrigue to the suspenseful PG-13 adaptation

Will there be an R-rated version of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, which is releasing in a PG-13 format this week?

Originating as a video game in 2014, Five Nights at Freddy's revolves around animatronics awakening and causing chaos in a deserted theme restaurant.

The survival horror game achieved instant success, sparking discussions about a potential film adaptation. Blumhouse and Universal Pictures revealed their intentions for a movie in 2015, but it took eight years for these plans to materialize.

Despite its genre, the film version of Five Nights at Freddy's received a PG-13 certificate from the MPAA. This led fans to speculate that an R-rated edition could potentially be released in the future, catering to those who crave more graphic content.

Will there be an R-rated cut of Five Nights at Freddy’s?

At present, there are no plans to release an R-rated version of Five Nights at Freddy’s.

“I wouldn't anticipate an R-rated rendition for this one," shared Emma Tammi, the co-writer and director, with Forbes. "We are extremely pleased with how the PG-13 atmosphere resonated; it seemed perfectly suited for this specific film. We are standing by it."

Despite the demands for a more violent version of the film from some gamers, Tammi explains that they aimed to cater to a diverse audience by including younger viewers. However, they also wanted to incorporate elements of darkness for those who desired a certain level of violence or its suggestion. While the lore provided ample dark material, they were selective in how they portrayed the kills and utilized creative methods to insinuate rather than fully depict the violence, all within the confines of a PG-13 rating.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is in UK cinemas now, while the movie hits Peacock and US theaters this Friday, October 27, 2023. For more on the film, check out the below articles:
