Aladdin is regarded as one of the top live-action adaptations, and has become increasingly popular. Will there be a sequel? Recently, Disney has been re-imagining its most beloved animated films as live-action adaptations, including Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.
The original was released in 1992 and was a major success. The live-action remake had high expectations to meet, and although it received a 57% Critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, its $1.054 billion box office earnings speak for themselves. With talk of a sequel since the 2019 release of the live-action film, is it actually going to happen?
Is a live-action Aladdin 2 happening?
Sadly, it seems like Aladdin 2 may never be happening, although this is yet to be officially stated.
Disney has been pursuing this concept for a while now, but in a recent interview with Screen Rant, Mena Massoud, the star of the project, stated that there hasn't been any progress on a sequel due to recent Hollywood strikes. "I don’t have any updates. I think like you said, the strike kind of just put everything on hold. I know they were trying to get it off the ground for a long time but I have no idea where it’s at."
It appears that Massoud is ready to move on, saying: “Listen, we shot in 2017. It’s been six years now since we shot and wrapped the project. To me, at a certain point, life just goes on. I’m sure they have their reasons."
“I’m not sure what obstacles they faced during their long attempt, but now that the strike is over, they may finally be able to move forward with their plans.”
An Aladdin live-action sequel has many potential storylines, with the original animated movie having several spin-offs such as The Return of Jafar and The King of Thieves, as well as an animated TV show.
The summary of the original remake goes like this: "Aladdin, a charming street urchin, crosses paths with Princess Jasmine, the stunning daughter of Agrabah's sultan. During a visit to her opulent palace, Aladdin discovers a magic oil lamp that releases a lively, humorous, larger-than-life genie.
"As Aladdin and the genie develop a friendship, they must join forces to go on a perilous quest to prevent the wicked sorcerer, Jafar, from seizing control of young Jasmine's kingdom."

As a Gen Z netizen, I grew up watching Disney animated movies and was thrilled when they started making live-action remakes. The live-action Aladdin movie was one of my favorites, and I was eagerly anticipating a sequel. However, it seems like Aladdin 2 may never happen, and I'm disappointed. I understand that there have been some obstacles, such as the Hollywood strikes, but I hope that Disney will eventually be able to move forward with their plans.
