Mavis Paterson, an 85-year-old woman, found solace in cycling after tragically losing all three of her adult children within a span of four years Known as Granny Mave, she embarked on a remarkable journey, cycling 1,000 miles around Scotland Discover the inspiring story of how Mavis embraced cycling as more than a habit, but as a lifeline that gave her purpose and strength in the face of unimaginable loss

Cycling has transcended being just a hobby for Mavis Paterson, affectionately known as "Granny Mave." It has become an integral part of her identity, her very purpose, especially after the devastating loss of all three of her adult children within a span of four years. In 2012, Sandy passed away, followed by Katie in 2013, and Bob in 2016.

In a touching tribute to her beloved children, the 85-year-old grandmother embarked on her most recent feat of endurance in May. She embarked on a remarkable journey, cycling a staggering 1,000 miles around the beautiful landscape of Scotland. Starting from the Mull of Galloway, she ventured north, tracing the contours of the country until reaching her starting point once again at the Mull of Galloway.

"I can't imagine wanting to continue living if I didn't have my bicycle," she shared with CNN Sport regretfully.

"Losing my entire family feels unimaginable. My daughter once expressed this after hearing about a friend's death, saying, 'Mom, just think about losing a child.' I empathized with her, unable to fathom such a loss because all of mine are gone."

Cycling has offered her solace and served as a coping mechanism in the face of an unimaginable loss.

"It has been a challenging journey for me, but somehow I have managed to persevere. People often remark on my strength, but I find it difficult to pinpoint its source," she expressed. "When they inquire about it, I honestly don't have an answer. I simply find solace in cycling, with the added support of my amazing friends."

Paterson cycled through Scotland's diverse terrain, facing its rolling hills, challenging roads, and erratic weather. Each day, she started her journey early, pedaling for up to 50 miles, all in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity based in the UK.

Throughout her adventure, fellow cyclists joined Paterson along the way, providing exceptional camaraderie and encouragement. Some rode alongside her for multiple consecutive days, offering invaluable support.

"She mentioned that many cyclists have all the necessary biking equipment, including cleats and lycra. However, I personally don't possess any of those items. I prefer ordinary pedals as using cleats would result in frequent falls. Nevertheless, I am a content and enthusiastic cyclist."

This unwavering support accompanied Paterson on her entire journey across Scotland, reaching its peak at the finish line where a crowd had gathered to cheer her on.

"And amidst the bustling crowd, stood my grandson, towering at an impressive height of 6-foot-3-inches. Spotting him, I couldn't contain my excitement and swiftly dashed towards him, an exhilarating moment indeed," she joyfully recalled, mentioning that she commemorated her accomplishment with a well-deserved glass of merlot.

On her journey, she also commemorated her 85th birthday with a festive gathering in the Scottish town of Moffat, all while conquering hills during her ride. Patterson remembers pondering, "I hope I can stay on my bicycle," as she pedaled over the steepest hill along her route.

If that old lady can do it

However, I proved them wrong. I pushed myself to reach the summit, exerting every ounce of effort. People would often suggest, "Why don't you consider getting an electric bike?" Their remarks were met with my firm response, "No, thank you. I prefer a bike that requires my labor. I strive to conquer those challenging hills, so that when I finally reach the pinnacle, I can proudly proclaim, 'Hey, I accomplished that!'"

Prior to facing knee problems, Paterson used to participate in marathons and half marathons. Due to her condition, she switched to cycling. In 2008, she embarked on a challenging journey across Canada with a friend. However, due to her friend's health issues, she ended up completing a significant portion of the ride on her own.

While cycling through the province of Saskatchewan, Paterson reminisces about the vast expanse of roads and fields, filled with nothingness. Despite the feeling of solitude, she never truly felt alone. She recalls engaging in conversations with her bicycle and finding humor in the whole experience.

In 2019, Paterson embarked on a new cycling adventure, covering the entire length of Great Britain. Starting from the southern tip of Lands End and concluding at the northern point of John OGroats, she achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the oldest woman to ever conquer this renowned route.

Macmillan Cancer Support offers healthcare, guidance, and assistance to individuals impacted by the disease.

She expressed her astonishment at people's incredible generosity and joyfully mentioned her ability to contribute financially to them.

Paterson had to undergo rigorous training for this venture, which involved cycling in various weather conditions for five or six days in a week.

"When youre my age, if you dont train and you think you can go do something, well you cant," she says. "Its tough training. The training I managed, I didnt feel old at all."

"People have observed my cycling journeys and thought, 'If that elderly lady can do it, so can I.' Additionally, individuals who have experienced feelings of sadness have been motivated by my story. They think, 'I shouldn't wallow in despair when poor Mave has endured the loss of all her children.' As a result, many individuals have taken up cycling, inspired by my rides," she expressed.

"People keep saying that Im an inspiration. Well, if I am thats great, Im happy about that."
