Antony Starr, who portrays the villainous Homelander on Amazon Prime's hit series, The Boys, recently shared his thoughts on the intense and contemptuous rivalry between his character and the leader of the Boys, Billy Butcher, during a conversation with Karl Urban, who plays Butcher.
The ongoing feud between Homelander and Butcher remains one of the show's most compelling plotlines. Homelander's heinous act of raping Butcher's wife, resulting in the birth of their son Ryan, has fueled Butcher's relentless pursuit of vengeance. Starr talked about the dynamic between the two characters when they share the screen.
During a conversation with Urban for Prime Video, Starr reminisced about his first scene with Urban in the last moments of The Boys season 1. He described how it was so much fun to work with Urban, who was so stoic, staunch, and on-point with his character's actions. Starr particularly enjoyed the scene where Urban's character, Homelander, lasered Stillwell and the unexpected look on his face afterwards. Starr admits that the dynamic between their characters is really fun to play, despite the fact that Homelander and Butcher don't share many scenes together.
Apart from the season 1 finale where they only share 10 minutes on screen, Homelander and Butcher have only appeared together three more times in season 2, and three times so far in season 3. With Butcher's terminal diagnosis, the clock is ticking on getting revenge on Homelander, so it's possible that we may see more scenes with the two of them together in the future.
The dynamic between Homelander and Butcher is one of the most intriguing aspects of The Boys. Although Homelander could easily eliminate Butcher, he refrains from doing so because Butcher doesn't fear him, which is a rarity for Homelander. Homelander craves genuine relationships since most individuals either fear or worship him. Even if Butcher despises him to the extent of wanting to kill him, Homelander appreciates the lack of pretense with a non-supe.
Following the events of The Boys season 3, Homelander understands that Butcher is serious about killing him and has nearly succeeded on numerous occasions. Additionally, Homelander was comfortable leaving Butcher alive previously since he didn't believe Butcher could ever get his revenge, but now he's closer than ever. With the knowledge that Butcher is capable of killing him, Homelander may consider it in his best interest to eliminate his rival before he has the last laugh.
The Boys seasons 1-3 can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
