Indiana Jones 5 Set to Break Records at Box Office Opening Weekend

Indiana Jones 5 faces a challenging opening weekend at the box office With a new adventure and fresh faces, it remains to be seen if audiences will embrace the film Will it surpass or fall short of its predecessor, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Only time will tell

The box office tracking for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is not looking promising. Despite being touted as the final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, fans are skeptical, having been promised this before. James Mangold, renowned for his work on Logan and Ford v. Ferrari, has stepped in to direct and is faced with the daunting task of filling Steven Spielberg's shoes. Unfortunately, the film's debut at Cannes was met with poor reviews, with The Dial of Destiny currently holding a 51% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a significant drop from the previous film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which boasts a certified fresh 77% critics score. However, the audience score for Crystal Skull remains low at 53%.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the latest installment in the franchise, is expected to have a $60 million opening weekend at the box office. While this may be lower than the $100.1 million that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull earned in its 3-day opening weekend 15 years ago, tracking data suggests that older male audiences are more enthusiastic about the film than younger male audiences. In terms of box office comparisons, the projected earnings of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny are comparable to other recent action films such as No Time to Die ($55.2M) and Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($61.2M).

Despite some optimistic projections of a $70 million opening, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny falls short of the tracking metrics of John Wick: Chapter 4, which opened to $73.8 million. Compounded by negative reviews from the Cannes Film Festival and upcoming competition from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Flash, Disney must target younger male audiences to boost box office revenue. However, even if the film opens with $60 million, it will still surpass the second-best opening for an Indiana Jones film, with Raiders of the Lost Ark opening to just $8.3 million in 1981, followed by The Temple of Doom with $25.3 million in 1984 and Last Crusade with $29.3 million in 1989.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
