To be able to use Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader Medkits, you need to invest in the Medicae skill at least once when you level up. Simply relying on perks and accessories to boost your Medicae skill will not be effective, regardless of how much you enhance the stat.

Simply investing in the Medicae skill at least once on the level up screen will allow you to equip and use Medkits.

What about Abelard?

An exception to this is Abelard, who has the Field Medic perk by default and can immediately use Medkits in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader. Additionally, Abelard is the companion who joins you early in the game, making the healing tutorial appear.

As an aside, we think the reason why this mechanic is confusing is because Abelard's Medicae skill is at 25, making you wonder what the heck might be wrong with your other characters.

How to equip Medkits and heal teammates

You can equip Medkits by accessing the Usable tab in your inventory and placing one of these items into any of the four consumable slots located in the bottom-right corner of your character's model. Once done, the item will appear in the lower-left corner of the action bar whenever a character is selected.

Whether you're in or out of combat, you can click on the Medkit icon, then click on a party member to heal them or remove their injuries. If you're in combat, Medkit usage costs +2 action points (AP), though there are certain talents that affect this requirement. Lastly, increasing your Medicae skill further boosts the effectiveness of your healing. However, we don't recommend doing this since there are more important skills to consider for your build.

Where to find more Medkits

Abelard's Field Medic talent lets him use Medkits by default. You can see that he has a couple equipped in the consumables slots in his inventory.

Where to find more Medkits

You can obtain more Medkits through exploration and by purchasing them from faction vendors. The former is self-explanatory, since Medkits can be found inside containers (some of which require skill checks before they can be unlocked). The latter involves increasing your reputation and Profit Factor. You can learn more about these mechanics in our trading and faction reputation guide.
