Tottenham is currently engaged in negotiations with Nottingham Forest regarding a potential agreement for Brennan Johnson. Brentford, who made a £40m offer for the Welsh international earlier this summer, also demonstrate significant interest, while Chelsea has reduced their enthusiasm.
Spurs are targeting three forwards ahead of Friday's deadline, with sources suggesting that Ansu Fati from Barcelona and Johan Bakayoko from PSV could be potential options. However, it is currently unconfirmed. Following Harry Kane's departure to Bayern Munich, Spurs are looking for a player with a similar profile to Johnson, rather than a typical center-forward.
Johnson was a standout player for Forest in the previous season, contributing eight goals and three assists to help the team steer clear of relegation from the Premier League. Despite starting in all three matches this season, the 22-year-old has yet to find the back of the net.
Tottenham have made eight signings this summer at a total cost of £167.8m, with Micky van de Ven the most expensive recruit so far at £43m.
Versatile Johnson would provide valuable depth
We football journalist Joe Shread:Tottenham is not expecting Johnson to be a direct substitute for Kane, which is completely acceptable. Following Kane's departure to Bayern earlier this summer, the team is determined to enhance their attacking options.
Spurs are not aiming to replace their most successful number 9 with a player who has a similar playing style. Instead, they are interested in acquiring a flexible forward who can fulfill various roles in Ange Postecoglou's attacking trio, and Johnson perfectly fits their requirements.
Throughout last season, Forest boss Steve Cooper frequently adjusted his system, deploying the Welsh international in different positions such as the wing, behind the striker, and even as the central forward. Regardless of the role he played, Johnson consistently delivered outstanding performances, as evidenced by the impressive statistics shown in the accompanying graphic, surpassing those of his teammates in numerous attacking aspects.
Should Johnson make the move to Spurs from the East Midlands, he will have the opportunity to challenge Dejan Kulusevski for a spot on the right wing, Heung-Min Son for a position on the left wing, and Richarlison as a central option.
As just 22 and with just one top-flight season under his belt, the 19-cap international should have plenty of room for improvement as part of Postecoglou's promising new era.
Exits could see Spurs sign centre-back and midfielder
Spurs are planning to trim their squad in the upcoming week, which may lead to the acquisition of a new center-back and central midfielder. Among the available options are Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, and Japhet Tanganga, and if one of them departs, Spurs will pursue their desired target.
Forest may consider signing Sanchez in the closing week of the transfer window, but they also have alternative choices for the centre-back position.
In the midfield, Ndombele's departure seems likely, and if Hojbjerg also leaves the club, Forest can bring in another central midfielder.
In the final week of the window, Sergio Reguilon is also on the transfer list, attracting interest from Manchester United and Fulham. Additionally, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and right-back Djed Spence are listed for a potential transfer.
Spurs plan to send Spence on loan to monitor his development, while winger Bryan Gil and striker Dane Scarlett might also be temporarily loaned out to gain regular first-team playing opportunities.
