The Harry Potter franchise has had a varied history with video games. The LEGO Harry Potter games are highly regarded, while the movie tie-in games have been a mix of successes and disappointments. Despite this skepticism, the first full-fledged Harry Potter open-world RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, has defied expectations and become one of the biggest success stories of 2023.

Currently the top-selling game of the year, Hogwarts Legacy has not only seen tremendous commercial success but also critical acclaim. It has provided a satisfying and expansive experience that surpasses anything seen before in the Wizarding World. However, this success may pose a challenge for a potential sequel, as replicating or surpassing elements such as the game's spells could prove difficult.

Hogwarts Legacy Will Have a Tough Time Trying to Outdo Itself with Spells

When creating a fantasy game centered around wizards, witches, and magic, it is crucial to have a wide variety of spells that are enjoyable to use. Fortunately, Hogwarts Legacy excels in this aspect. Throughout the game, players will be able to learn a total of 34 spells, each serving a unique purpose. These include 26 combat spells, three customization spells, and several puzzle-solving spells. The Harry Potter universe is renowned for its iconic spells, and even if Hogwarts Legacy doesn't feature a fan-favorite, it still offers spells that closely resemble them.

A potential sequel to Hogwarts Legacy would face a significant challenge in surpassing the spells found in its predecessor. One major obstacle would be the quantity of spells included in the game. As a sequel, fans would expect the successor to feature at least the same number of spells, if not more. If Hogwarts Legacy 2 had fewer spells, players may perceive it as a downgrade compared to the original game.

However, this presents a second major issue that a potential sequel to Hogwarts Legacy may encounter regarding spells. Players would desire a greater selection of spells in Hogwarts Legacy 2, but they also anticipate the majority of these spells to be entirely new. While there are numerous beloved spells that fans would be thrilled to see carried over to Hogwarts Legacy 2, an excessive reliance on the same spells could lead to some fans perceiving Avalanche Software as being unoriginal. Fans anticipate that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy will introduce a larger repertoire of spells, and these additional spells should be fresh and innovative within the series.

This also raises another significant concern about the spells in Hogwarts Legacy 2. While having more spells is advantageous, these new spells must also provide a satisfying and unique purpose, whether in combat or exploration. Each of Hogwarts Legacy's spells currently serves a distinct function, such as solving puzzles by moving obstacles or breaking an enemy's shield. Half of the enjoyment in Hogwarts Legacy's combat lies in discovering the unique purposes and strengths of each spell. A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy cannot simply introduce more spells for the sake of quantity; it must only incorporate spells that genuinely enhance the gameplay experience.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 14, 2023.
