Hogwarts Legacy Achieves Enormous Success with 22 Million Copies Sold, Expanding Harry Potter Gaming Franchise

In 2023, Warner Bros. Games revealed that Hogwarts Legacy had sold 22 million copies, with 2 million sold in December alone. Despite the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, the game achieved significant success. David Haddad, the boss of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, expressed that Hogwarts Legacy had brought Harry Potter to life for gamers in a new and immersive way.
Hogwarts Legacy, released in February, quickly reached impressive sales and revenue milestones. Within the first two weeks, the game sold 12 million copies and generated $850 million. It continued to soar, surpassing 15 million copies sold and $1 billion in revenue. This accomplishment solidified its status as Warner Bros.' biggest game release to date. In the US, Hogwarts Legacy claimed the No. 1 spot for best-selling game through November 2023, with December's numbers soon to be revealed. If it maintains this position for the entire year, it will mark the first time in roughly 15 years that a game other than a Call of Duty title or a Rockstar Games release has topped the annual sales charts in the US.
Haddad noted that Hogwarts Legacy has claimed the No. 1 spot, an achievement typically held by Call of Duty and Rockstar titles. He expressed pride in breaking into the top ranks. There are rumors of a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, but nothing has been confirmed at this stage. While Haddad did not discuss the possibility of a follow-up, he did mention that Warner Bros. is working on "a series of other things" in the Harry Potter series for new games. One of these new games is Quidditch Champions, which is currently in beta-testing.
Warner Bros. Discovery management previously commented on the enduring appeal of Harry Potter, citing the success of Hogwarts Legacy. The company is now pushing forward with a plan to create a seven-season live-action series based on the Harry Potter books, with each season focusing on one book.
Additionally, a documentary about the paralyzed stunt double of Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, who was injured during the filming of The Deathly Hallows, is currently available for streaming on Max.
