Fans gathered at Anime NYC last night to celebrate the notable milestones of Kill la Kill's 10th anniversary and the two Gurren Lagann movies' 15th anniversary. After engaging in panel discussions and a Q&A session with fans and creators, a surprising video message caught everyone's attention.
Katsuyuki Konishi, the voice actor behind Kamina in the Gurren Lagann anime, expressed gratitude to the fans for their presence and addressed their inquiries. However, he had an even bigger announcement in store: the two Gurren Lagann movies, already scheduled for a premiere in the United States, are now officially confirmed to receive 4D and 4K screenings.
The movies' announcement came along with a fresh trailer. For the first time ever, both films will be screened with English-language dubs and subtitles. Childhood's End is scheduled to premiere on January 16 and 17, 2024, while The Light in the Sky are Stars will debut on January 23 and 24, 2024. Tickets for these movies will be available for purchase starting from December 8.
Aside from the screenings, the Gurren Lagann movies recently made their debut in 4K Blu-ray format, marking a significant milestone in the series' 15-year anniversary celebration.
Set in a dystopian future, the story of Gurren Lagann revolves around humanity's plight of living underground, as imposed by the tyrannical ruler, Lordgenome. A pivotal moment occurs when Simon, a young boy, stumbles upon the ancient ignition key to a formidable mecha called Lagann. Teaming up with Kamina and Yoko, Simon embarks on a mission to defy their oppressors and reclaim the world above. Along their journey, they are joined by a group of fellow survivors, further bolstering their resistance.
The original Gurren Lagann anime aired in 2007, consisting of a total of 27 episodes. Animated by the renowned studio Gainax, it was followed by Childhood's End in September 2008 and The Light in the Sky are Stars in April 2009. This beloved anime series can be streamed on the popular platform, Crunchyroll.
