Summary
IMAX's decision to give screens to Oppenheimer instead of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One paid off, as Oppenheimer made impressive box office numbers.
In North America, IMAX theaters accounted for nearly 30% of Oppenheimer's box office, despite representing merely 1% of all theaters. The decision to prioritize Oppenheimer over Mission: Impossible might have played a role in the lukewarm earnings of the latter, as it faced competition from the successful concurrent release of Barbie and Oppenheimer.
New data supports IMAX's decision to prioritize Oppenheimer over Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Despite being headlined by Tom Cruise, the premiere of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One on July 12 yielded a total of $552.7 million at present, marking the lowest earnings for any Mission: Impossible film since 2006. The lackluster performance can largely be attributed to its release just one week prior to the highly-anticipated dual release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21, which shattered box office records and prompted an extended IMAX screening for Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan.
In a recent interview on the podcast The Town with Matthew Beloni, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond disclosed that the IMAX share of the total Oppenheimer box office stands close to 30% in North America. These figures become even more remarkable when Gelfond provides the context that the 400 IMAX theaters account for only approximately 1% of all theaters in North America.
Oppenheimer's Box Office Pull Was Undeniable
It is likely that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One could have achieved higher box office results if it had not faced competition from Barbie and Oppenheimer. Tom Cruise has consistently proven himself as a major box office attraction, particularly with the success of last year's Top Gun: Maverick. This sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun was a massive hit, earning $1.49 billion and ranking as the twelfth highest grossing film worldwide.
However, IMAX's decision to collaborate with Oppenheimer is justified. Christopher Nolan, a highly influential filmmaker with a strong appeal to both mainstream and sophisticated audiences, is renowned for his grandiose spectacles and impeccable technical craftsmanship. Consequently, viewers often associate him with premium formats like IMAX.
This association undoubtedly worked in Oppenheimer's favor. If the reported 30 percent figure is accurate, the movie generated a staggering $90.9 million in the North American market solely from IMAX screenings. Remarkably, this sum exceeds the global earnings of certain 2023 releases such as Cocaine Bear and No Hard Feelings. While this may have negatively impacted the performance of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, it was a logical decision for IMAX to continue showcasing the Nolan film for as long as possible.
