In September, speculation about a potential series reboot of The Office was sparked by comments from co-creator Greg Daniels. In an interview with The Wrap, Daniels clarified his preference for a new direction in the same universe instead of a complete overhaul. He firmly stated that any revisit of The Office would not be considered a reboot.
"I don't believe in calling anything a reboot, you know what I mean? I believe we concluded that story beautifully. The characters had closure," Daniels explained. "I would never want to recreate the same show with a different cast because I believe we had the most fortunate and talented cast in TV history to bring that show to life. Therefore, the idea of a reboot doesn't interest me."
Instead of a reboot, Daniels expressed his desire to further explore the universe, using Star Wars spinoff shows as a parallel. "Something like The Mandalorian being a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean?" Daniels explained, envisioning a documentary crew producing a documentary about a different subject. He believed this concept could be both intriguing and creative, but he felt that the term "reboot" would not be appropriate in this case.
In 2022, Daniels mentioned one idea for revisiting The Office involved introducing new characters as an "extension of the universe." Steve Carell acknowledged that a character like Michael Scott would not be well-received in today's climate due to his inappropriate jokes.
Daniels spoke with The Wrap in support of his Prime Video series Upload, which just finished Season 3 on the platform.

As a passionate fan of The Office, I'm thrilled to hear that Greg Daniels has confirmed there are no plans for a reboot. I completely agree with his reasoning - the original show concluded beautifully, and the characters had closure. A reboot would only serve to tarnish the legacy of the original.
I'm excited about the possibility of exploring new stories within the Office universe. Daniels' idea of a documentary crew producing a documentary about a different subject could be a great way to do this. It would allow us to see new characters and stories while still staying connected to the world of The Office.
