In the vast DC multiverse, only a minuscule fraction of characters have made it onto the big screen, leaving countless fan-favorite comic book heroes and villains in obscurity. However, James Gunn and other creators are determined to shine a spotlight on overlooked characters like G.I. Robot. As part of the upcoming HBO animated series Creature Commandos, a group of unusual monsters from DC Comics' extensive library will be featured, including some lesser-known villains and unique takes on classic sci-fi archetypes. G.I. Robot, on the other hand, is a distinct and beloved character in its own right.
Who is G.I. Robot?
The limited imagery of Creature Commandos features a G.I. Robot with a "2" on its helmet, suggesting it is a new version of J.A.K.E. 2. The previous G.I. Robots, Joe and Mac, were destroyed in combat and were known to make their fellow soldiers question whether they possessed humanity. J.A.K.E. is an experiment of Project M, created by Professor Mazursky during WWII to make soldiers who looked like monsters to intimidate their enemies. J.A.K.E. is considerably stronger, faster, and more durable than any human and possesses a functional machine gun for a left arm, rocket boots, and heightened senses. J.A.K.E. 1 sacrificed his life in 1943 to save American sailors and was replaced by J.A.K.E. 2.
J.A.K.E. 2 was deployed into the Pacific Theater immediately after the first J.A.K.E. was destroyed and proved to be a valuable asset by defeating a Japanese military robot. He served during the remaining period of World War II and later joined the Creature Commandos through Project M. While on Dinosaur Island, he formed a bond with his robot dog companion, C.A.P. Unlike his predecessor, J.A.K.E. 2 possesses the ability to mimic any sound and communicate telepathically, which he gained from an encounter with Starro. He is often portrayed with human emotions such as loyalty and loneliness, but it remains unclear whether he genuinely feels them or if he is simply emulating his comrades.
When did G.I. Robot First Appear in DC Comics?
The G.I. Robot was a popular character in the Star Spangled War Stories series, created by Ross Andru and first introduced in 1962. He was later replaced by Mac in 1966. In 1981, Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert introduced J.A.K.E., another mechanical soldier, in the Weird War Tales series. Both J.A.K.E.s were depicted as superheroes in a World War II setting, which was a common theme in the anthology. However, the G.I. Robot stood out as the most iconic military machine in the series. Weird War Tales was known for featuring classic war stories with a supernatural twist, making it a beloved and unique comic book series.
Who is Playing G.I. Robot in Creature Commandos?
G.I. Robot, portrayed by Sean Gunn, brings a new level of communication to the team with his voice, a departure from the first J.A.K.E. who relied on gestures. This will be Gunn's third official DC character role, having previously played Weasel and Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad. While Gunn is best known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he seems poised to bring an old-fashioned edge to the team as G.I. Robot. The series appears to be drawing from the most engaging version of the character, who has only appeared on-screen once before. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Push-Button Hero in the spotlight when Creature Commandos debuts next year.
