The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced the list of honorees for the Autumn Conferment of Decorations, which included Hisaishi among the distinguished 1,914 members of the Order. The official ceremony for his induction will take place in Tokyo on November 10th, 2023.
The Order of the Rising Sun was established by Emperor Meiji in 1875. It is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to Japan, excluding military-related achievements. The prestigious honor spans various fields, including art, which led to Hisaishi's recognition. Numerous individuals, both Japanese and non-Japanese, have been granted this accolade, with 103 foreign members currently included.
Since the release of Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind in 1984, Joe Hisaishi has served as the principal composer for Studio Ghibli. Thus far, he has composed the music for every other Ghibli film. In addition to his work with Studio Ghibli, Hisaishi also created the score for The Tale of Princess Kaguya by Isao Takahata and acted as the producer for the stage adaptation of My Neighbor Totoro in London.
Not only was Hisaishi honored with the Medal of Honor in 2010, but he also secured his sixth Japanese Academy Award for "best music" in the same year!
