Two people accused of plotting a firearms attack on Sweden's parliament were taken into custody in Germany on Tuesday. The Office of the German Federal Prosecutor made an announcement about this.
According to the statement, the two individuals, who are said to be from Afghanistan, were apprehended close to the city of Gera in central Germany on suspicion of terrorism.
CNN has contacted Afghanistan's embassy in Berlin to get a statement.
Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, mentioned in a statement on Tuesday that one of the arrested individuals is believed to be a member of the terrorist group ISIS, while the other is suspected of supporting them.
The suspects were given instructions for the planned attack by a branch of ISIS in the summer of 2023, as reported by the Office of the German Federal Prosecutor.
The attack was planned as retaliation for the Quran burnings in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. The prosecutor mentioned that police officers were among the intended targets.
The statement mentioned that the two detainees had made "concrete preparations" for a terror attack and had attempted to obtain weapons, but were unsuccessful. They had also conducted research on local conditions in Stockholm, where the attack was planned to occur.
Additionally, investigators found that both individuals had gathered donations totaling approximately 2,000 Euros (around $2,170) to be sent to ISIS.
The suspects will appear before the German Federal Court of Justice on Tuesday or Wednesday, as stated by the German federal prosecutor. The court will make decisions regarding arrest warrants and pre-trial detention for the suspects.
According to Faeser, the arrests demonstrate Germany's continued vigilance in preventing Islamist attacks. She emphasized that Germany acts consistently to thwart such threats.
"The threat of Islamist terrorism is still a major concern," according to Faeser. She mentioned that security authorities are paying special attention to Islamist terrorism. This story is still developing, so stay tuned for updates.
