George RR Martin Developing Three Animated Spinoffs for Game of Thrones

George RR Martin is expanding the Game of Thrones universe with three animated spinoffs, showcasing his unwavering commitment to deliver an abundance of captivating content

George R.R. Martin is aware that there is a wide range of content to choose from, but that does not deter him from creating even more. In a recent blog post, the author of "Game of Thrones" revealed that he is currently developing three animated projects based on the immensely popular franchise.

Martin expressed, "With the abundance of television options these days, particularly in the era of streaming, it's becoming increasingly challenging to stay updated." He added, "Discovering a new show that captivates and leaves a lasting impression is always a delightful experience."

He highlighted Netflix's animated series "Blue Eye Samurai" as one such impressive show, and used this as a segue to reveal details about his own animated shows currently in development.

"HBO and I have our own animated projects based on A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. None have been greenlit yet, but progress is being made. When development began, we had four ideas for animated shows, with talented individuals involved. Unfortunately, two of the original projects were shelved." Martin wrote. It is worth noting that HBO is owned by CNN's parent company.

Martin has announced that the "Nine Voyages" prequel to "House of the Dragon" will be animated. The story will focus on the Sea Snake Corlys Velaryon, portrayed by Steve Toussaint in "House of the Dragon."

"Due to budget limitations, a live action version of the show would have been excessively costly, given that half of the scenes take place at sea and the need to create a new port each week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth and beyond," Martin explained. "There is a vast world to be explored, and animation gives us a better opportunity to showcase it all. As a result, we now have three animated projects in progress."

Although Martin is optimistic about the projects making it to screens, he also noted, "Nothing is guaranteed in Hollywood."

One thing that is certain: the second season of "House of the Dragon" is set to debut this summer.
