Following the failed assassination attempt on Daenerys Targaryen's life, her husband and Khal, Drogo, vows to give her the Seven Kingdoms. However, with enemies lurking in the Seven Kingdoms and a Khaleesi and unborn child to protect, Drogo's promise to give his son the "iron chair that his mother's father sat upon" raises concerns for their safety. In Game of Thrones season 1, episode 7 "You Win or You Die," Khaleesi is overjoyed at the prospect of finally going home, but the reality of their conquest becomes apparent during the Lhazareen plunder in episode 8 "The Pointy End." After a challenge from a member of his khalasar, Mago, Drogo takes a seemingly harmless cut to the chest. Despite his assertion that "it is the bite of a fly," a worried Khaleesi calls for a healer. A Lhazareen godswife named Mirri Maz Duur, who had been claimed by Daenerys earlier, steps forward to offer her healing services, using smokes and ointments learned from her mother. On Daenerys' insistence, Drogo allows Duur to treat his wound to prevent it from worsening.

Daenerys Places Dragon Eggs Next To Drogo

Unveiling the Mystery: How Daenerys Hatched Dragon Eggs

Drogo falls off his horse and his condition deteriorates in Game of Thrones season 1, episode 9 "Baelor." His khalasar and bloodrider, Qotho, begin to lose faith in him, but Daenerys remains hopeful, insisting that he is simply tired and they need to rest. She orders Qotho to fetch the godswife, Durr, to heal Drogo's festering wound, despite his reluctance. Even when her trusted advisor, Ser Jorah, advises her to leave and seek refuge elsewhere, Daenerys refuses to abandon her husband.

Jorah warns Daenerys that she and her unborn son are in grave danger, but she remains steadfast in her belief that Drogo will recover. Durr, a duplicitous sorceress, tells Daenerys that there is a spell that can revive Drogo, but it comes at a great cost. Daenerys assumes Durr will ask for gold, but she is told that in bloodmagic, only death can pay for life. Durr orders for Drogo's stallion to be brought into his tent and begins a ritual, much to the horror of Daenerys' Dothraki bodyguard, Rakharo.

Despite Rakharo's protests, Daenerys nods for the stallion to be sacrificed over Drogo's body, believing that it will bring him back to life. However, the spell fails, and Daenerys' son, Rhaego, pays the ultimate price.

After the loss of Drogo's khalasar, Daenerys is left devastated when the vengeful sorceress renders him comatose with her blood magic. The sorceress had predicted that Drogo would only awaken when impossible events occurred, such as the sun rising in the west and setting in the east, or the seas running dry and mountains blowing away like leaves. Despite knowing this outcome, the sorceress carried out her ritual, driven by her resentment towards Khal for burning down her temple. Heartbroken, Daenerys accepts the reality and decides to end Drogo's suffering by smothering him with a pillow. In the final moments of his life, she places her three dragon eggs next to him, unaware of the incredible events that are about to unfold. This marks the beginning of a new era as the birth of the dragons heralds the dawn of a new age in Game of Thrones season 1, episode 10 "Fire and Blood."

After receiving three dragon eggs as a wedding gift, Daenerys decides to hatch them on Khal Drogo's funeral pyre. These eggs are said to be from the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai and have turned to stone due to time. Daenerys takes a different approach than Aegon V Targaryen's disastrous attempt, and orders Durr to be bound to the pyre for a bloodmagic ritual to commence. Will Daenerys succeed in hatching the eggs? Only time will tell.

Daenerys ignites the pyre and steps into the flames as Durr's cries echo. The sorceress' demise is the cost of Daenerys' dragons' birth. At sunrise, Ser Jorah discovers an unscathed, unclothed Daenerys encircled by three dragon hatchlings. Drogon, the dragon she rode until her tragic end, perches on her shoulder while Rhaegal rests in the warmth of her left hand and Viserion clings to her left leg. Ser Jorah, Rakharo, and a few Dothraki men and women kneel as the Mother of Dragons rises from the ashes like a phoenix. The season 1 finale marks the start of Daenerys' captivating journey, which ultimately ends poorly in the Game of Thrones series finale.
