Geico is reintroducing its beloved Caveman in an upcoming commercial titled “The Nightmare,” according to information provided to Our Website. The intense two-minute ad features one of the prehistoric characters waking from a terrifying dream, tormented by Geico’s classic “so easy, a caveman can do it” tagline introduced nearly twenty years ago.
The advertisement will first appear during a linear pod takeover on NBC Sunday Night Football on Dec. 24 and will also be featured on YouTube Live. In addition to this, the brand has shared a playlist of classic commercials featuring the original cavemen.
Created in collaboration with The Martin Agency, "The Nightmare" brings back a creative concept that gained immediate popularity when it was first introduced in 2004. The agency was also responsible for the original version of the campaign, which challenged stereotypes by portraying cavemen as intelligent, sophisticated individuals. The nostalgic "The Nightmare" marks the beginning of a two-month long campaign that will end with a final piece airing around the time of the Super Bowl.
In 2004, Geico's Caveman ads broke new ground in comedic advertising by featuring an anti-spokesperson. The tone was dry, edgy, and sometimes biting, which made it memorable, according to Neel Williams, group creative director at The Martin Agency. "When you reintroduce an ad icon like the Caveman, you can't take it lightly," Williams said. "That's why we combined the right entertainment-driven idea with Geico's messaging around ease and captured the right attention-grabbing, long-form media opportunity. With all those things working in harmony, we were able to bring back Caveman at his best: dramatic, poignant, subversive, intimate, and relatably human."
The original cavemen ads from Geico were a hit and even spawned a short-lived ABC sitcom starring the characters. Despite the show being poorly received and subsequently canceled, Geico capitalized on the popularity by airing a Super Bowl XLII ad in 2008 that featured the cavemen satirizing the program and tagline.
