Sony has confirmed that the new PS5 slim models will support SSD expansion, despite having increased internal storage space.
The limited storage capacity of the PS5 has emerged as a significant concern as it quickly gets occupied by bulky games. In contrast, the slim version of the PS5 entails various enhancements such as an expanded SSD, reduced weight, and a more compact design.
Sony has confirmed that both of its new PlayStation 5 slim models will have a key feature: the ability to expand the storage using an SSD. Some speculation arose that the new PS5 slim models might eliminate support for SSD expansion due to the increased internal storage space. However, this is not the case. Sony has officially announced that slim PS5 buyers will have the option to upgrade with an M.2 SSD, similar to current PS5 gamers.
The issue of console storage space has become excessive compared to previous console generations. While the launch console of the PS5 offers 667GB of usable internal storage, that is not sufficient in recent times. Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War take up a staggering 175GB, while NBA 2K23 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor require around 150GB. In essence, the PS5 could potentially fill up with just five large games.
The priority of expanding the PS5's storage through SSD installation is clearly recognized by Sony. In a recent statement to IGN, Sony confirmed that there will be no changes to the features of the PS5 slim model. Both the digital-only and disc-supporting PS5 slim models will include the SSD expansion slot.
Compared to the original PS5 models, Sony's updated PS5 slim model does have some differences. The most significant change is the upgraded 1TB SSD, which provides additional space for the console. In terms of aesthetics, the PS5 slim now features a stripe on the side, but the major changes are internal. The slim PS5 is approximately 20-25% lighter and around 30% smaller than its predecessor.
Sony has confirmed that the new PS5 models have the same hardware and features as the previous ones, except for some external changes. This means that the new PS5s will have the same CPU and GPU, resulting in no improvement in game performance with the new console. The only question was whether the SSD expansion slot would be retained, and that has also been confirmed now.
Although some PS5 owners might question the need for a slim upgrade with no significant improvements or price changes, there are likely strong business reasons behind this decision. Manufacturing the slim PS5 is probably more cost-effective compared to its predecessors, and the smaller size and lighter weight likely lead to cheaper shipping costs. The target audience remains those who don't already own a PS5, which is why features like support for SSD expansion are still a priority.
The slim PS5 launches in November.
