Game-Changing Deal: Rockstar Gains Control of GTA and Red Dead Roleplay Developer

Rockstar secures the team behind the thriving Red Dead Online and GTA Online communities, solidifying their dominance in the gaming industry

Highlights

Rockstar Games has acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, marking a significant step in supporting the fan-run roleplay servers for GTA Online and Red Dead Online.

The acquisition enables Cfx.re to further enhance FiveM and RedM with the backing of Rockstar, while exclusively dedicating their efforts to these platforms and not engaging in the development of GTA 6 or other Rockstar games.

Rockstar's acquisition underscores the studio's dedication to the roleplaying communities and their significance in the future of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, providing reassurance to fans that RP servers will continue to flourish.

Rockstar Games has officially acquired Cfx.re, the team responsible for the development of FiveM and RedM. These groundbreaking platforms have revolutionized the world of Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online, leading to the formation of the largest roleplay communities in both games.

By utilizing FiveM and RedM, players gain the ability to create and join custom servers specifically designed for Rockstar Games' GTA Online and Red Dead Online. These independent private servers offer players the opportunity to modify their online gameplay without directly altering the original game files. Additionally, as these servers operate separately from Rockstar's official servers, players have the freedom to seamlessly switch between them without the fear of facing automatic bans. These remarkable features, along with others, have paved the way for the development of immersive roleplaying servers in GTA Online and Red Dead Online, most notably the highly popular NoPixel server in the former game.

Rockstar has announced the acquisition of Cfx.re through a post on its website's Newswire, while Cfx.re has also released a separate statement. In their post, Rockstar expresses their excitement for the innovative ways in which fan communities have expanded the realms of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The company particularly aims to support fan-operated roleplay servers, leading to recent modifications in Rockstar's mod policy. By acquiring Cfx.re, Rockstar aims to discover fresh avenues to enhance their services and fortify the roleplay communities of Red Dead Online and GTA Online.

On the other hand, Cfx.re stressed that its acquisition by Rockstar would not bring about major changes in its day-to-day operations. However, the company acknowledged that Rockstar's support would greatly enhance FiveM and its community. The Cfx.re team expressed enthusiasm for the possibilities this partnership presents. Nevertheless, they made it clear that their primary focus would remain on improving FiveM and RedM. Cfx.re stated that it would not be involved in the development of upcoming games like Grand Theft Auto 6 or any other aspects of Rockstar's game development.

Previously, Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive had a complex relationship with RP servers. Last year, Rockstar imposed restrictions on GTA Online roleplay servers. However, these measures were primarily aimed at preventing third parties from profiting from Grand Theft Auto Online. Even then, Rockstar made it abundantly clear that they supported the RP community.

Rockstar Games' recent acquisition of Cfx.re solidifies the importance of RP servers in the future of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. While fans may have reservations about potential increased control from Rockstar, both parties currently express optimism about their partnership.
