The trailer for Futurama season 8 reveals the return of a variety of characters, including both main and minor figures from the original series. Futurama has had a unique journey, with four seasons airing from 1999 to 2002, followed by four standalone movies from 2007 to 2009, and then a three-season revival from 2010 to 2013. After nearly a decade of silence, Hulu announced a 20-episode revival for season 8 in 2022.
The trailer showcases the extensive cast of characters from Futurama back in action. Similar to The Simpsons, Futurama has featured numerous one-off characters and guest stars throughout its run. While it's expected that not all fan-favorite characters would return for season 8, the trailer does a great job of bringing back many beloved supporting stars from the show's history. Viewers can look forward to seeing familiar faces, including the Planet Express crew and memorable villains from past episodes.
10 The Planet Express Crew
9 The Worms
The return of the entire original Planet Express crew, including Fry and Leela, was confirmed in the recently released season 8 trailer of Futurama. Despite initial concerns about John DiMaggio reprising his role as the voice of Bender, fans can rest assured that he will indeed be back. In fact, Bender takes center stage in the trailer, delivering some of its most memorable lines. Hermes, Amy, Professor Farnsworth, Scruffy, and Zoidberg also make appearances, ensuring that the beloved crew is intact. It comes as no surprise that Bender's character receives special attention in the promotional material, given the challenges overcome to secure DiMaggio's return.
In the second episode of season 3 of Futurama, titled "Parasites Lost," Fry becomes infected with a legion of parasitic worms after consuming an expired egg salad sandwich from a vending stall located in a gas station restroom. Surprisingly, the situation takes an emotive turn as Fry is faced with a choice between retaining the heightened intelligence provided by the worms or opting to remove them from his body. Eventually, he decides to eliminate the worms, consequently losing his ability to impress Leela. However, in the eighth season trailer of Futurama, these antagonistic characters make a comeback and engage in a confrontation with the protagonists.
8 Calculon
7 Roberto
Despite Bender being the most infamous robot in the original run of Futurama, he is not the only mechanical member of the show's cast. Another notable character is Calculon, the smooth-talking star of the in-universe soap opera All My Circuits, who frequently appears throughout the series. In the regrettable episode "Bend Her" from season 4, Calculon briefly has a romantic relationship with Bender and has also played smaller roles in numerous episodes. In the season 8 trailer of Futurama, Calculon can be seen on an exploding paddle boat.
While Bender may have questionable morality, he is relatively sane compared to the violently unstable Roberto. This recurring antagonist, whom Bender encountered at the HAL Institute for Criminally Insane Robots, has a penchant for stabbing and attempted to kill both Bender and anyone else he came across during Futurama's seven seasons, often resulting in his own destruction. Despite dying multiple times, Roberto makes an unexpected appearance in the season 8 trailer, depicted in a Wild West-style saloon, implying that this character will make a comeback.
6 Lrrr
A more prominent antagonist than Roberto, Lrrr is a recurring character throughout Futurama. He is an Omicronian despot with a penchant for violence, constantly plotting armed invasions of planets and exterminating their inhabitants. However, he surprisingly has a soft spot for Earth television, and his deep-seated hatred for humans stems from the fact that they unknowingly consumed his offspring. In the Futurama season 8 trailer, Lrrr can be seen suffering from a satirical form of the COVID-19 virus.
5 Zapp Brannigan & Kif
In his quest to win over Futurama's leading lady, Leela, Fry consistently found himself facing off against the ridiculously self-centered military captain, Zapp Brannigan. Despite his glaring incompetence, Zapp's unwavering arrogance never hindered his misguided attempts to save the day. Unfortunately, his efforts almost always backfired, but thankfully, his loyal assistant Kif was always on hand to intervene. As evidenced by a brief scene in the season 8 trailer, both Zapp and Kif will be making a comeback, with a glimpse of Kif dutifully tending to his boss.
4 Dwight Conrad
3 Nibbler
: Dwight Conrad, the son of Hermes in Futurama, has played minor roles in multiple episodes of the show. Interestingly, his actions inadvertently set the stage for the plot of Bender's Game, the Dungeons and Dragons parody film in the Futurama series. Similar to his father, Dwight possesses excellent business acumen and is skilled with numbers. In a preview for season 8 of Futurama, Dwight makes a brief appearance, confirming his character's reappearance. During this clip, Dwight and Hermes showcase their shared talent as they skillfully dodge a barrage of bullets while limboing.
Previously seen as a mere adorable animal companion, Nibbler's true identity as Lord Nibblonian, a member of an ancient extraterrestrial species, was eventually unveiled. It was Nibbler who clandestinely transported Fry to the distant future in the year 3000, and despite his vast intelligence and grand aspirations for the universe, he continues to be an integral part of the Planet Express team. This teaser trailer for season 8 of Futurama features Nibbler speaking early on, hinting at another forthcoming revelation of his true nature to the crew.
2 Mom
Arguably the most formidable adversary in the extensive history of Futurama,
1 Linda Van Schoonhoven
is the deceptive and seemingly amiable CEO of MomCorp. Resembling Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, Mom displays a cruel and heartless demeanor, exhibiting contempt towards her subordinates. However, contrasting with Mr. Burns, she possesses an unquestionably favorable public perception, despite her mistreatment of her own trio of intellectually challenged offspring. Staying true to her character, in the season 8 trailer of Futurama, Mom can be observed once again delivering a blow to her sons' heads following yet another encounter with the Planet Express crew.
Throughout Futurama's seven seasons and four movies, Linda van Schoonhoven, a newscaster, makes regular appearances. Linda shares the news hosting duties with the formidable alien Morbo, who does not appear until the first trailer of season 8. Despite her minor role, Linda is one of the few supporting stars to feature in all four spinoff movies of Futurama. Based on a snippet of a news report about a mysterious illness spreading across the planet in the trailer, it seems that Linda will also return in Futurama season 8.
