Former Bethesda Developer Reveals Company's Overconfidence Before Fallout 76 Release

Bethesda's overconfidence led to their downfall - Former developer reveals how the company's arrogance ultimately caused the troubled launch of Fallout 76

Although Fallout 76, an online-focused game, has improved significantly, its initial launch in 2018 was far from successful. According to former designer Bruce Nesmith, who has since departed from Bethesda, the company's belief in its own infallibility, based on the success of its previous games, led to a lack of focus during development.

Reflecting on the experience, Nesmith admitted, "I personally found Fallout 76 to be a challenging project. The company's vision was not as concentrated as it should have been, which is evident in its entry into the marketplace. Ultimately, our excessive confidence became our downfall."

"We not only achieved numerous successes, but also garnered the prestigious title of 'game of the year' acknowledged by the entire industry, not just within our own circles or limited to a couple of publications," he remarked. "The resounding consensus was that this game stood out above all others. It led us to believe that we were invincible and capable of accomplishing anything. However, it became evident that this assumption was flawed."

Continuing, Nesmith revealed that while the executives at Bethesda continuously pushed for the incorporation of multiplayer and online elements into their games, it was actually the fervent fanbase who had been clamoring for the development of an online game that ultimately sparked the creation of Fallout 76.

Nesmith revealed that the executives at Bethesda would repeatedly urge Howard to incorporate multiplayer into their games annually. Despite Howard's persistent disapproval, the mounting demand from players eventually influenced him to consider the idea. Consequently, the concept emerged to create a Fallout game with a multiplayer feature as a seemingly simple task. However, it turned out to be a significantly more challenging endeavor than initially anticipated, resulting in a problematic release of Fallout 76. Nevertheless, Bethesda persevered and made significant enhancements to the game over time, ultimately transforming it into what the company now considers a success.

Bethesda Game Studios' latest release, Starfield, garnered praise from both critics and a staggering 11 million players. However, despite this success, it holds the unfortunate title of being the lowest-rated BGS game on Steam. Worth noting, Starfield does not offer multiplayer capabilities. Looking ahead, BGS has an exciting lineup of upcoming projects in the works, including The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5.

2023 marks the fifth anniversary of Fallout 76, and Bethesda is celebrating with, among other things, a Halloween event called Spooky Scorched that's running now through November 7.
