Ford is issuing a recall for 112,965 F-150 pickup trucks due to a potential roll-away risk caused by a damaged rear axle hub bolt. The recall affects F-150 vehicles from model years 2021 through 2023 that are equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The agency's alert warned that the rear axle hub bolt could fatigue and break, leading to damage to the axle hub splines. This damage could cause a vehicle to roll away while in park without the parking brake applied, or result in a loss of drive power. The NHTSA stated that these issues could elevate the risk of a crash.
The fix is currently in development, and F-150 owners are advised to bring their vehicle to a dealership for an interim repair if they notice a clicking or rattling noise from the rear axle bolt. Letters will be mailed to F-150 owners at the end of January, and they can also reach out to Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. The recall number for this issue is 23S65.
In the previous year, Ford issued a recall for over 870,000 of its full-sized F-150 trucks due to the potential for the electronic parking brake to engage unexpectedly, even while the vehicle is in motion, posing a risk of loss of control and potential accidents. A spokesperson for Ford (F) informed CNN that the company is currently developing a solution, which will be communicated to dealers and customers in the near future.
