The Success of Five Nights at Freddy's and the Story So Far
After the success of Five Nights at Freddy's, many are wondering what the sequel, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will look like, and one recent Matthew Lillard update offers an exciting hint at what is to come. Five Nights at Freddy's is a video game franchise that was first released in 2014, and has since spawned various video game sequels, and more recently, a 2023 feature film. The story follows the creepy activity surrounding an abandoned pizzeria called Freddy Fazbear's, which is inhabited by haunted animatronics. In particular, the film follows a man named Mike who becomes the nighttime security guard at Freddy's.

Among the Five Nights at Freddy's cast is Matthew Lillard, who portrayed William Afton. In the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, William Afton is the mastermind behind the hauntings at Freddy Fazbear's. He is a serial killer, who was the cause behind most of the casualties that occurred throughout the Five Nights at Freddy's series. In the film, he is the one who got Mike the job at Freddy's and is in control of the animatronics via his own animatronic suit, a yellow rabbit called Springtrap. However, at the end of Five Nights at Freddy's, the animatronics turn on him, and he is painfully encased in his suit forever.

Matthew Lillard's Comments and the Potential for a Bigger Springtrap Role
In an interview with Screen Rant, Matthew Lillard commented about his time playing Afton in 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's, and in particular, he talked about his special animatronic suit. Lillard said, 'One of the things I was surprised about is that I sort of fell in love with the costume work. I really found it exciting to explore working within that huge body.' He went on to say that if a sequel is made, he would love to continue working with the suit, but also, he would enjoy exploring other parts of Afton's character outside of the animatronic suit.
Because William Afton is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, it would be no surprise for Matthew Lillard to return in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, but what would be extra exciting is if he returned in the Springtrap suit. Based on Lillard's comments, the actor enjoys the suit, and that hints that perhaps there will be even more of it in the Five Nights at Freddy's sequel. Based on how the first film ended, this would make sense as well. Ultimately, it would be great to see more of the yellow rabbit suit.
Springtrap's Potential as a Scarier Villain in Five Nights at Freddy's 2
If William Afton's Springtrap really does make a notable return in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, then the movie has a chance to make Springtrap an even scarier villain. In Five Nights at Freddy's, Afton's scariest moments were the ones in which Mike realizes that he is a serial killer, but also the man that killed his brother. In this way, his moments as Springtrap are downplayed. However, if he returns in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, then there is a chance for Springtrap to have some truly scary moments as an animatronic rather than as William Afton.
