Fans speculate Gege Akutami's disdain towards Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen fans speculate Gege Akutami's apparent disfavor towards Gojo based on the mangaka's advice, sparking the belief that there might be some underlying animosity towards the beloved character

Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, has given advice to fans of Gojo that has led them to believe that the mangaka holds animosity towards their beloved character. The popular dark Shonen anime and manga series features a number of iconic characters, but many fans are particularly drawn to the enigmatic sensei, Satoru Gojo. However, despite Gojo's widespread appeal, it appears that not everyone, including the series' creator, shares the same admiration for him.

Repeatedly, the mangaka would casually make negative comments about fans' favorite characters, leaving them stunned by the apparent disdain for the most powerful sorcerer of the current age. Despite this, the unconventional teacher consistently ranks high in popularity polls, and fans have a strong affection for him.

But, not long after Gojo emerged victorious in a significant popularity poll, Akutami offered some advice to the fans who had voted for him. The message was directed specifically at women.

Why Jujutsu Kaisen fans believe Gege Akutami hates Gojo

Renowned Twitter personality JJK (Mya) pleasantly surprised fans with the re-sharing of an older artwork by Gege Akutami following Satoru Gojo's victory in the popularity poll at Jump Festa 2019. In addition to the artwork, Gege Akutami also imparted some advice to fans: "For those who supported Gojo, especially the women, here's a friendly suggestion: Consider choosing Nanami."

Nanami is undoubtedly Gege's favorite character, as revealed in a 2022 interview with Comic Book. The mangaka shared that while Sukuna was originally his favorite due to the graphic aspects, he has grown to favor Nanami, the first character he created and evolved by himself. As for Gojo, despite the success of the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc, Gege's message to the animators included a cutesy doodle and a comment about the top-tier animation given to even the mob characters.

Gojo is undeniably the central character of the entire arc, so it wouldn't be fair to label him just a background character. However, Gege's resentment towards Gojo didn't just stop there. In January 2020, Gege Akutami shared in Viz Mangaka Musings, "Now that Gojo is gone, it's looking like 2020's gonna be a good year," leaving many fans heartbroken after witnessing Gojo's sealing in the Shibuya Incident arc.

In November 2019, Viz Mangaka Musings shared a comment from the Mangaka Gege Akutami about Satoru Gojo, suggesting that he may lack a personality. Jujutsu Kaisen fans are once again left speechless after Gege Akutami's old comment resurfaced, with one user speculating that it may have been a hint about Gojo's fate in the story.

Another fan shared: “Gojo’s first hater was his own creator…”

One fan also commented: “This man straight up hates Gojo so much without any solid reason.”

Some Jujutsu Kaisen fans stand by Gege despite Gojo stans' disappointment. One fan expressed support, saying, "I wouldn't blame Gege for choosing Nanami. He's the epitome of a good partner." Another user added, "As a fellow Nanami enthusiast, I wholeheartedly approve."

Editor's P/S

As a passionate fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I find the speculation surrounding Gege Akutami's disdain towards Gojo to be intriguing and thought-provoking. While it is natural for fans to feel protective of their favorite characters, it is also important to consider the creator's perspective and artistic vision. Akutami's advice to fans to consider choosing Nanami over Gojo, as well as his comments about Gojo lacking a personality, suggest a complex relationship between the mangaka and his creation. It is possible that Akutami's intention is to challenge readers' expectations and subvert traditional storytelling tropes, rather than harboring any personal animosity towards Gojo.

Akutami's preference for Nanami, whom he created and developed himself, highlights the mangaka's personal connection to certain characters. This does not necessarily imply a dislike for Gojo, but rather a natural inclination towards characters that resonate more deeply with the creator. Ultimately, it is up to each individual fan to interpret Akutami's comments and form their own opinions about his feelings towards Gojo and other characters.
