Summary
Despite the youthful cast of Stranger Things, the use of the F-word is limited, with only three instances throughout the series.
Will Byers, typically quiet, surprisingly exclaims the F-word following a heated altercation with his friends.
Billy Hargrove, under the control of the Mind Flayer, delivers the most intense usage of the F-word as he menacingly intimidates his sister Max, leading to a highly charged moment.
Stranger Things may have a young cast, but that doesn't mean they refrain from using explicit language, including the F-word. However, the Hawkins gang mostly opts for less aggressive alternatives. Since the show's inception in 2016, only a small number of characters have actually said the word f**k, and it's easy to miss those instances. Surprisingly, Stranger Things has only depicted characters using the F-word three times throughout its entire run, and one of those instances doesn't even complete the word. It's worth noting that all three instances occur in Season 3, contradicting the misconception that it is consistently used throughout the series. According to a report from the Parents Television and Media Council, they claim the show has featured at least 20 uses of "f**k," although it's possible they may be referring to moments where characters make obscene hand gestures, which happen much more frequently.
3 Will Byers - Season 3, Episode 3, "The Case of the Missing Lifeguard"
2 Billy Hargrove - Season 3, Episode 4, "The Sauna Test"
Will Byers, known for his quiet and polite demeanor, surprises viewers by unleashing the F-bomb in Stranger Things. During a heated argument with his friends Mike and Lucas, Will angrily shouts, "F***!" as he destroys Castle Byers. This outburst carries significant weight as it marks the first time Will has ever used profanity, showcasing his extreme distress and vulnerability. Unfortunately, this pivotal moment may go unnoticed by some viewers due to the overpowering score and absence of captions depicting his expletive.
In the subsequent episode, Billy Hargrove, the rebellious character from Hawkins, delivers the most intense and terrifying use of profanity. Under the influence of the Mind Flayer/Vecna, Billy attempts to manipulate both his gang and his younger sister Max while they have him trapped in the sauna. Tears stream down Billy's face as he appears to genuinely suffer, until the Mind Flayer swiftly seizes full control and forcefully propels Billy towards Max, shattering the glass window, all while shouting, "I'll f***ing gut you!" Thankfully, Max's connection to Will allows her to sense the impending danger in time, yet the scene remains incredibly suspenseful, particularly considering the explosive animosity and aggression unleashed by Billy in that very instant.
1 Max Mayfield - Season 3, Episode 6, "E Pluribus Unum"
In Stranger Things, the latest instance of the F-word is not fully expressed as the character is interrupted. Max Mayfield, the younger stepsister of Billy Hargrove and a recent addition to the Hawkins gang, nearly utters the F-bomb when they enter a hospital room where Nancy is being attacked by a horrifying quadruped Mind Flayer. As Eleven forcefully opens the door and they witness the creature redirecting its attention towards them, Max exclaims in shock, "What the fu-" before Eleven swiftly dispatches the creature with her supernatural abilities.
