As Jack Ryan ascends to the role of Acting Deputy Director of the CIA in season 4, he seeks the aid of Greer and November when a dangerous new international threat emerges. Together, they must confront this perilous situation that poses a risk to the national security of the United States, potentially exposing the agency's most covert secrets.
Wendell Pierce & Michael Kelly on Being a Team and Saving Jack Ryan's Life
Screen Rant was able to interview Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly right after the Boston debut of Jack Ryan season 4. We delve into Jack Ryan's formation of a team with Jim Greer and Mike November, the introduction of a different aspect of Greer in season 4, and the undisclosed key to Kelly's portrayal of the light-hearted Mike November.Screen Rant: What I appreciate about your interpretation of Jack Ryan is the sense of camaraderie among all of you. Unlike the films and books, Jack doesn't have a dedicated team. And truthfully, without your collective support, his survival would be highly unlikely.
Michael Kelly expresses his amusement and confirms that indeed he would thoroughly enjoy working with these two outstanding actors. He describes this as the most rewarding aspect of being on the show. Wendell Pierce agrees, acknowledging that their exceptional rapport is evident in the work they do at the agency, highlighting the importance of relying on one another's expertise to create a cohesive team.
Wendell, I really appreciate how you brought so much depth to the character of Jim Greer. It's especially intriguing to witness his interactions with his family, something we never got to see with James Earl Jones' portrayal. Could you share some insights on that? It's fascinating to consider the challenges that officers face in maintaining their family ties, similar to the hardships of military families. Being in Intelligence requires even more caution, as they must constantly safeguard their identity and actions to avoid endangering themselves.
Furthermore, it is essential to understand the impact that work can have on a family and what it takes to keep it together. This was a topic I wanted to delve into, so I shared my thoughts with John. He gladly agreed to incorporate this into the story as it progresses. This is one of the advantages of working on a series; it allows us to explore various facets of a character. In the case of this series, the origin story expands upon James Greer's character in a significant manner, for which I am truly grateful.
Michael, what I admire the most about Mike November is his ability to always appear as though he's thoroughly enjoying himself. How does one manage to have a good time, even when faced with the threat of terrorists?
Michael Kelly: To be completely honest, I truly enjoy myself. Michael Kelly knows how to have a great time. I don't mean to refer to myself in the third person; I only aim to differentiate between Mike November and my own identity. Fun is an integral part of my life. I believe that collectively, we made a conscious decision to showcase Mike November's evolution throughout season two. He undergoes a remarkable transformation, largely thanks to these two individuals who unlock the hidden potential within him. In my opinion, they bring out the best in him. This growth continues to flourish in the third and fourth seasons.
A significant factor in all of this is John and his absolutely crazy sense of humor. Many of the funny one-liners and actions that I perform are just John spontaneously saying, "Hey, say this, do that." It allowed me the freedom as an actor to follow my own instincts and add my own touches. It's been amazing to witness his growth over the years. Let me tell you, it was an absolute delight to portray such a fun character, especially after playing intense roles for such a long time. It was incredibly refreshing to have an audience member remark, "He actually has a smile!" (laughs) I can recall that smile vividly.
Michael Kelly chuckled, expressing his excitement at the freedom he possesses on the set of Jack Ryan. The speaker then expressed their admiration for the show and their desire for a more extended conversation about it, expressing their enjoyment of the season and the work done by the actors. They also expressed hopes for the return of the actors for another season or the possibility of a spin-off centered around Rainbow Six.
Michael Kelly: Me too, buddy. Your lips to God's ears. Thank you.
Wendell Pierce: Good point. Thank you so much, John.
