The Unprecedented Collaboration
In a historic move, Disney is breaking new ground by partnering with an external studio to bring to life an original animated series. The highly anticipated show, Iwaju, is a product of the collaboration between Disney Animation and Kugali Media. This marks the first time in Disney's century-long history that such a partnership has been formed, signaling a bold step into uncharted territory.
Set in the futuristic landscape of Lagos, Nigeria, Iwaju follows the journey of Tola, a young girl, and her companion Kole as they navigate through a world filled with mysteries and perils. The series promises to delve into the depths of their contrasting realities, unveiling a narrative that transcends time and space. The recently released trailer offers a glimpse into the visually stunning and thought-provoking concept that awaits viewers.
Visionary Minds Behind the Scenes
At the helm of Iwaju's creative team is director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, whose artistic vision shapes the narrative of the series. Collaborating with Adeola are talents such as production designer Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku, who bring their expertise to enrich the authenticity of the storytelling.
Behind the scenes, Disney Animation's Christina Chen leads the production, working closely with Adeola and writer Halima Hudson to weave a captivating tale that resonates with audiences worldwide. The voice cast, featuring Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia, breathes life into the characters, adding depth and emotion to the narrative.
A Cultural Odyssey on Screen and Beyond
The inception of Iwaju stemmed from a serendipitous encounter between Disney executive producer Jennifer Lee and a BBC feature highlighting the aspirations of African artists to challenge the status quo. Inspired by their passion and creativity, Lee initiated a dialogue that culminated in the birth of Iwaju, a testament to the power of collaboration and storytelling.
On February 28, all six episodes of Iwaju will premiere on Disney+, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a world where tradition meets innovation. In tandem with the series, Disney Iwaju: Rising Chef, a mobile game developed by Maliyo Games, offers players a culinary experience inspired by the vibrant cuisine of Nigeria, enriching the Iwaju universe beyond the screen.
