Tier Harribel, once known as the Tres (3rd) Espada and one of the strongest Arrancars in Hueco Mundo, met a tragic end in the Bleach series. In the battle of Fake Karakura Town, she appeared to have been killed by Sōsuke Aizen, the main villain of the Arrancar arc. Despite this, she survived and went on to rule Hueco Mundo, until she was captured and imprisoned by the Wandenreich, the main enemies in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.
Tier Harribel's past and fate after Bleach TYBW
Tier Harribel was captured by Yhwach and kept in a special room in Slibern, where she was chained. However, her ultimate fate was never mentioned in the original manga, as Kubo did not reveal what actually happened to her. This was due to Kubo's medical problems and the one-year deadline his editors gave him for the manga's conclusion, which forced an accelerated completion. Fortunately, Tier Harribel's exact fate is known through the sequel light novel Can't Fear Your Own World.
Tier Harribel's life took a dramatic turn when she crossed paths with Aizen, a former Gotei 13 captain who betrayed the Soul Society and harnessed the power of the Hōgyoku. This device could bridge the gap between Hollows and Soul Reapers, resulting in the creation of an army of Arrancars. Aizen promised Harribel the opportunity to attain incredible new abilities, ensuring that she would never again have to make sacrifices for the sake of her friends.
Harribel's loyalty to Aizen was shattered when he betrayed her and the other Espada. Aizen revealed that he had only manipulated them as test subjects and pawns to achieve his own ambitions. He asserted that he alone deserved the Hōgyoku, having transcended both Hollows and Soul Reapers.
Suddenly attacking Harribel from behind, he slashed her across the torso before callously abandoning her to perish. He coldly declared that she was no longer of any use to him and that he had no use for weaklings.
Despite the attack, she managed to miraculously escape thanks to her unwavering spiritual strength and determination. Her Fracción, who had also endured their own fights, eventually located her and joyfully carried her away from the battlefield. With Tier Harribel being the sole surviving Arrancar, she assumed the role of ruler in Hueco Mundo.
Harribel's reign came to an abrupt end when she was plunged into conflict with a formidable new adversary - the Wandenreich, a secretive group of Quincies with the ability to absorb and manipulate spiritual energy. Their goal was to eliminate both Hollows and Soul Reapers, leading to their assault on Hueco Mundo and declaration of war against the Soul Society.
Harribel faced the intruders in an attempt to defend Hueco Mundo, but she was overpowered by Yhwach and his Sternritter. She was then imprisoned in a water tank, tortured, and interrogated by the Wandenreich, yet she remained defiant and proud, refusing to give in.
In the sequel light novel, it is revealed that Grimmjow and Nelliel arrived in Wahrwelt after the fall of the Wandenreich and freed Tier Harribel from captivity.
She was in a dire condition, as nobody had succeeded in curing her. However, having survived the grave injuries inflicted by Aizen in Fake Karakura (with Orihime's help), she demonstrated her strength as an Espada and a resilient fighter by surviving once again.
Several months following the war, Harribel engaged in battles with some of the Sternritter hiding in Hueco Mundo. They were on a mission to locate surviving Soldaten to execute a sudden assault on Mayuri's Division, aiming to retrieve the surviving Sternritter that Mayuri had been using for experiments. Additionally, in the light novel, fans witness Harribel working to restore some semblance of order in Hueco Mundo.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan of Bleach, I am fascinated by the tragic fate of Tier Harribel, once the formidable Tres Espada and a symbol of strength in Hueco Mundo. Her journey is a testament to the complexities of loyalty, betrayal, and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. Harribel's unwavering determination to protect her people and her refusal to succumb to despair, even in the face of Aizen's betrayal and the Wandenreich's relentless pursuit, make her a compelling and relatable character.
The ambiguity surrounding her ultimate fate in the original manga left many fans yearning for closure, and I am grateful that the sequel light novel provided the answers we sought. Knowing that Harribel survived and continued to fight for her people, even after enduring unimaginable suffering, brings a sense of relief and admiration. Her resilience and strength serve as an inspiration, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for redemption and a chance to rebuild.
