Exploring the Character Evolution: How Bakugo's Original Concept Shaped My Hero Academia

Bakugo, one of the most popular characters in My Hero Academia, could have lost his essence if his original portrayal had been chosen. Fortunately, the mangaka Kohei Horikoshi took a different approach with the character. Considering Bakugo's vital role in the series, his initial depiction could have completely altered the plot of My Hero Academia.

As Deku's rival, Bakugo serves as a significant counterpoint and source of motivation for him. Initially, Bakugo's overwhelming confidence led him to bully Deku before they both entered UA. However, once he recognized Deku's newfound strength, Bakugo turned him into his inspiration, driving him to become even stronger and prove himself. By focusing on Deku, Bakugo was able to uncover Midoriya's secret before any other character, further fueling his determination. This unwavering resolve, which captivated audiences, would have been absent in the character's original version.

My Hero Academia's Bakugo Originally Had A Different Personality

In the author's notes at the end of Chapter three of My Hero Academia, Horikoshi explains a different direction he initially intended for Bakugo's character. Instead of the loud and brash personality he possesses now, Bakugo was initially written as a natural genius who unintentionally insulted others. He would make comments like, "Anyone could accomplish that." However, Horikoshi felt that this version of Bakugo was too bland and decided to create the more directly insulting character that fans adore today. This change ultimately improved the story, as the original version would have taken away the qualities that fans love about Bakugo.

Considering that the original version portrayed Bakugo as a natural-born genius, it's likely that he wouldn't have had the drive to strive for improvement and surpass Deku. This would have made Bakugo's participation in battles against formidable foes like Shigaraki less captivating and would have likely resulted in him being less popular. Additionally, his initial personality wouldn't have positioned him as one of Deku's bullies in the beginning of the series, which would have deprived fans of the compelling moments between Deku and Bakugo, including witnessing the latter's regret for his past actions.

It is noteworthy that a portion of the initial design made its way into the final rendition. Throughout the series, Bakugo is portrayed as a "genius", signifying his innate proficiency in wielding his formidable Quirk, and his potential to become a Pro Hero. Evidently, Horikoshi's original interpretation of Bakugo would have been detrimental to the overall narrative, potentially hindering the show's success. This emphasizes the significance of Bakugo's role in the triumph of My Hero Academia as a whole, leading fans to appreciate the character even more, realizing that they could have ended up with a far inferior version.
