Is Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones making a cameo in the new MCU miniseries, Echo?

Ritter has not reprised her role as Jones since Netflix cancelled its MCU series in late 2018/early 2019. However, her Defenders co-star Charlie Cox has returned as Daredevil in various projects, including Echo. Additionally, Cox's former castmate Vincent D'Onofrio is also returning as Kingpin in Echo. Is it possible that Ritter will also make a comeback? Keep reading to find out. Warning: Spoilers for Echo ahead!

Is Jessica Jones in Echo?

No, Jessica Jones does not appear in Echo, nor is she mentioned by any of the show’s characters.

In July 2022, The Hollywood Reporter reported on unnamed sources claiming that Daredevil would be searching for a former ally, believed to be Jessica Jones, in one of the subplots of Echo. However, when Echo's five-episode run was released on January 9, 2024, this subplot was missing. Daredevil only appears in a single scene, fighting protagonist Maya Lopez (played by Alaqua Cox). It is unclear whether scenes of Daredevil trying to find his fellow Defenders teammate were filmed and later cut. Ultimately, there is no sign of Jessica Jones in the aired version of Echo.

Marvel Studios hits reset on Daredevil: Born Again

Despite not being hinted at in Echo, there's still a possibility for Ritter to appear as Jones in the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. However, rumors online suggest otherwise, claiming that Jon Bernthal's Punisher will take on the role originally meant for Jones.

It's difficult to keep up with Marvel Studios' plans for Daredevil: Born Again. In October 2023, studio president Kevin Feige and his team made significant changes by replacing head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman. Dario Scardapane is now the showrunner, having previously worked with Bernthal as an executive producer on Netflix's Punisher series. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have also been added to the team and will be in charge of filming the remaining episodes of Season 1.

Echo Episodes 1-5 are now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. Check out more of Dexerto’s coverage of the MCU series below:

Editor's P/S

As a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I was thrilled to hear about the upcoming miniseries, Echo. The character of Echo, played by Alaqua Cox, first appeared in the Hawkeye series and quickly became a fan favorite. I was particularly excited about the possibility of seeing Krysten Ritter reprise her role as Jessica Jones in Echo. Ritter's portrayal of Jones in the Netflix series was critically acclaimed, and I was eager to see her character interact with the wider MCU.

However, I was disappointed to learn that Jessica Jones does not appear in Echo, nor is she mentioned by any of the show's characters. This news came as a surprise, as there had been rumors and speculation that Jones would make an appearance. I understand that Marvel Studios has a lot of characters and storylines to juggle, but I can't help but feel that Jessica Jones' absence is a missed opportunity. Her character would have added an interesting dynamic to the show and would have allowed fans to see how she has evolved since the events of her Netflix series.
