Jared Leto is set to star in Disney's next film, Tron: Ares. The film has been in development since Tron: Legacy came out in 2010, but it only gained traction nearly ten years later. Leto's involvement was announced in 2017, but there hasn't been much information released about the movie. While filming Morbius in March 2022, Leto mentioned that the new Tron movie is still in progress.

I'm a huge Tron fan and we're working closely with our awesome partners at Disney. It's a fantastic team of creative individuals. We're making progress," he shared with Screen Rant. "We're getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something exciting might be on its way sooner than you think."

In the following year, there was a change in leadership for Tron: Ares as director Garth Davis left the project in January 2023. Later on, it was revealed that Joachim Rønning would be stepping in to direct the film.

Unfortunately, Tron: Ares experienced a setback in production due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. As a result, filming was postponed until November 2023. However, production was rescheduled to start at the beginning of the following year.

Is ‘Tron: Ares’ a Sequel?

The film was initially thought to be a sequel to Tron: Legacy, but it ended up being more of a reboot. Leto plays a new character named Ares instead. The idea for this came from the original Tron 3 script, which brought Leto's character into the Tron universe, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Meet the ‘Tron Ares’ Cast

Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith were the first to join the cast in June 2023. Shortly after, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins also hopped on board. The star-studded roster was further enhanced in January 2024 with the addition of Gillian Anderson.

What Is ‘Tron: Ares’ About?

The movie summary hints that Leto’s character, Ares, is a computer program who transitions from the digital world to the real world. This storyline puts a new spin on the earlier Tron movies, where humans ventured into the computer realm called the Grid.

In the first sneak peek released by Disney in February 2024, fans got a glimpse of Leto's character Ares. He is seen wearing black and red armor, along with a helmet that conceals his face.

Leto excitedly captioned the image with, "ARE YOU READY?? TRON: ARES 2025." He also added, "See you on the grid... ."

When Does ‘Tron Ares’ Premiere?

After facing several delays, Tron: Ares is expected to hit theaters in 2025.
