Chris Pratt has had some controversial moments in his career. Despite gaining popularity for his role as the lovable Andy on Parks and Recreation, the actor has also faced criticism for insensitive comments he has made in the past.

In 2020, a meme went viral asking people to choose which Hollywood Chris “has to go” between Pratt, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine. So many people selected Pratt that he started to trend on social media.

Pratt jokingly addressed the meme on his Instagram Stories, writing, “I made it into the finals! I’m in the finals! I was picked last. It was very traumatic. Anyone who’s been picked last knows how that feels.”

Blue-Collar Representation Comments

Pratt caused a stir in 2017 when he mentioned that Hollywood often overlooks the stories of blue-collar Americans.

During an interview with Men’s Health in April 2017, Pratt expressed his view, saying, “I don’t see personal stories that necessarily resonate with me, because they’re not my stories. I think there’s room for me to tell mine, and probably an audience that would be hungry for them. The voice of the average, blue-collar American isn’t necessarily represented in Hollywood.”

Shortly after his comments gained attention, Pratt acknowledged his error.

"I have to admit, that was a pretty foolish thing for me to say," he shared through X. "I take full responsibility for it. There are actually many movies that depict the lives of working-class Americans."

Chris Pratt's Opinion on Subtitles

One month after making controversial comments about blue-collar workers, Pratt stirred up more attention by encouraging his fans to watch his videos at full volume instead of relying solely on subtitles. This suggestion upset the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, prompting Pratt to issue an apology in the form of a video where he used sign language.

His religious affiliation

He recently made a video with subtitles, asking viewers to turn up the volume instead of just reading the subtitles. This was to ensure that people don't scroll past the video on mute and actually watch and understand the content. However, he acknowledges that this was insensitive to the millions of Americans living with hearing disabilities. He apologized for his actions, recognizing the importance of being considerate towards those with disabilities. In the future, he promises to be more aware and understanding.

In 2019, rumors circulated that Pratt, known for being open about his faith, was a member of the controversial Hillsong Church. This megachurch, now discredited, has expressed anti-LGBTQIA+ beliefs. Despite this, Pratt clarified that the church he attended welcomed everyone and compared his divorce from Anna Faris to the LGBTQIA+ community.

On his Instagram Story in February 2019, Pratt stated, "I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone. Despite what the Bible says about divorce, my church community supported me throughout, showing love and understanding. They were there for me without judgment, offering immense help and care. I have witnessed them do the same for others, regardless of sexual orientation, race, or gender."

Three years later, Pratt addressed rumors about his connection to Hillsong in a public statement.

In a June 2022 interview with Men’s Health, Pratt clarified, “I want to make it clear that I have never been to Hillsong and do not know anyone from that church. I am not a religious person, and I believe that religion has been oppressive for a long time. It's surprising to me that I have become associated with religion when it's not a significant part of my life.”

Pratt and Faris, who have a son named Jack together, got divorced in 2018. The next year, Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger. Even though Pratt and Faris remained friendly after their separation, some people thought he threw shade at Faris in 2020. This happened when he posted a thank you message to Schwarzenegger for giving him a “healthy” daughter. (It's important to note that Faris and Pratt's son Jack was born prematurely.)

Pratt later shared that he was upset when some people misunderstood his happy announcement as a negative comment about Faris and Jack.

In a June 2022 interview with Men's Health, he mentioned that several articles criticized him, claiming that he was being insensitive by thanking his current wife for their healthy daughter, especially since his first child was born premature. Pratt expressed his distress, saying, "That is messed up. My son will see those articles one day. He's only nine years old. It really bothered me, man. I even cried about it."

Controversy Surrounding L.A. Home Demolition

Pratt and Schwarzenegger faced criticism in April 2024 for their decision to tear down their Los Angeles residence. The couple bought the iconic Zimmerman house to be near Schwarzenegger's mother, Maria Shriver. Originally constructed in 1953, the house's demolition upset many preservationists.

DC Hillier expressed his sadness and anger on Instagram about the demolition of the Zimmerman House in Los Angeles's Brentwood neighborhood. The house was designed by Craig Ellwood in 1953 and featured landscaping by Garrett Eckbo. Actor Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger purchased the property so Schwarzenegger could be near her mother, who owns two properties across the street. Despite criticism, Pratt and Schwarzenegger have not responded.
