The expansion of The Office universe is one step closer to becoming a reality. Greg Daniels has been assigned the task of creating a new series within The Office universe. According to Deadline's report on Wednesday, March 20, he has brought on Michael Koman to work with him. The series, produced by Universal Television, is still in development and there is no guarantee of it coming to fruition.
The series mentioned by Deadline would not be a reboot of The Office, but rather a follow-up. It would be a mockumentary-style show set in a different office with new characters, although some familiar faces from the American series may make appearances. So, don't expect a return to Scranton or the Dunder Mifflin paper company.
In January, Daniels, who helped adapt The Office for an American audience, started working on the project with NBC. The U.S. version of the BBC comedy hit, which premiered in 2005, featured stars like Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, B.J. Novak, and Jenna Fischer, who all gained fame from the show's nine-season run.
Koman is experienced in the genre, having cocreated the docu-reality series Nathan For You with Nathan Fielder. He successfully led the hit series through four seasons on Comedy Central. Additionally, he has worked on popular shows like The Colbert Report, MadTV, and Late Night With Conan O’Brien. Both Koman and Daniels began their careers as writers on Saturday Night Live.
Interestingly, Koman is married to Ellie Kemper, who joined The Office cast in its fifth season.
In addition to creating The Office, Daniels also helped create successful shows like Parks and Recreation and King of the Hill. He even worked as a writer for The Simpsons and penned the memorable episode “Bart Sells His Soul.”
Although Daniels has repeatedly mentioned his disinterest in reviving the show with the same storyline or characters, NBCUniversal has shown a persistent interest in finding ways to expand The Office universe.
Novak, who was a writer on the show as well, mentioned to Deadline that fans should not expect a full reunion. "Definitely you wouldn't get everyone back together, that ship has sailed," he explained.
More than a decade after The Office ended, the show continues to be a beloved favorite on American television and streaming platforms. It can be watched in syndication on Comedy Central and Freeform. Fischer and her co-star Angela Kinsey host the rewatch podcast “Office Ladies,” where they recap an episode each week, keeping the series alive for fans.
The Office is now conveniently available for streaming on Peacock.
