Mortal Kombat: Onslaught introduces its post-launch game mode called Khronicles, which will regularly introduce new characters with their own stories to the mobile game. The first character to be added is the Mortal Kombat 1 version of Scorpion. We are curious to see how the addition of Scorpion will be explained, but there is still much to be done before that happens.
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will launch with four game modes: the PvP-focused Arena, the straightforward Story Mode, the challenging Boss Towers, and the fun-filled Chasm Mode. The Khronicles will be introduced after the game's release as part of MKO's ambitious plans for continuous game updates. Each Khronicle will introduce a new character, which will be available for all players to try out for free. This allows players to decide whether they want to permanently unlock the character or not. Although no specific timeline was provided, Scorpion from MK1 will be the first addition to the game.
During a recent presentation, lead designer Mike Lee emphasized that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is an entirely separate universe, distinct from MK1's New Era, but open to the possibility of crossovers. Lee outlined that the initial Khronicle will shed light on how and why Scorpion has ventured into this alternate reality, with subsequent Khronicles introducing additional Mortal Kombat characters, as well as potential console or licensed guest characters. Essentially, the crossover potential is boundless, given NRS' expertise in incorporating guest characters.
