Highlights

The Gothic remake is set for release in the second half of 2024, as confirmed by Alkimia Interactive at Gamescom 2023.

In the Gothic remake, players can anticipate enhanced combat mechanics and a world that is 20-30% larger than the original game. They can also look forward to new dialogue and fan service, as well as thrilling arena fights against monsters. The game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5, providing a visually stunning playable demo. However, the developers' goal is to ensure that the final product maintains the dark and atmospheric visual style of the original.

At Gamescom 2023, the developers of the Gothic remake provided new gameplay details for the upcoming RPG and announced a narrowed down release window for 2024. This unexpected appearance follows the recent release of a trailer showcasing the game's Old Camp. Originally announced in early 2020, the reimagining of the iconic 2001 RPG is being developed by Alkimia Interactive, a Barcelona-based studio specifically created for this project, under the guidance of THQ Nordic. In 2019, the publisher conducted a playable teaser to gauge interest in the Gothic remake.

And even though THQ Nordic did not have an official presence at the 2023 Gamescom, opting to halt all trade show activities for the year, TechRadar managed to arrange a meeting with Alkimia Interactive Director Reinhard Pollice and composer Kai Rosenkranz, the original scorer for the Gothic trilogy, at the Cologne event. While the project's release date has been shifted to the second half of 2024, the media outlet had the chance to experience a brief playable demo of the game, featuring a prisoner named Nyras who found himself trapped in the Colony six months before the arrival of the Nameless Hero.

The demo confirmed that Alkimia has completely overhauled the combat system from the 2019 playable teaser, which received criticism from fans for resembling the Souls series too much. Instead, the remake will require players to gradually learn how to effectively utilize different weapon types, resulting in increased power, speed, and a wider range of combo attacks, similar to the original game. The enemy designs will also stay true to the first Gothic, while the remake's world will be expanded by approximately "20-30%." Additionally, the remake will include new dialogue and fan service, such as the introduction of the Varant desert, a location featured in the lore of 2006's Gothic 3.

Furthermore, Alkimia announced that the Gothic remake will now be powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5, after switching from UE4 during development. The playable demo reportedly showcased the distinctive polished aesthetic commonly associated with Unreal Engine games, although the developers intend to capture the gloomy atmosphere and unique visual style of the original for the final product. Alkimia also confirmed that the remake will introduce expanded arena battles in the Old Camp, featuring fights against monsters in addition to human foes, as hinted at in the latest trailer for the game.

The developer's increasing willingness to provide limited hands-on sessions with the Gothic remake suggests that fans won't have to wait much longer to see some gameplay footage for the highly anticipated RPG. Additionally, fans can also look forward to an upgraded version of the original Gothic for the Nintendo Switch, which is scheduled to release in September this year. The Gothic remake is set to arrive on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in the latter half of 2024.
