Highlights
Ermac, a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 1, has a surprisingly prominent role in the game's story, leading some fans to speculate that he was taken out to be sold as DLC.
Ermaccer, a modder, incorporated Ermac into the game by creating a non-playable modification. However, it was discovered that Ermac's moveset is incomplete and includes elements borrowed from other characters.
Notably, Ermac and Quan Chi did not initially make the cut in the roster of playable characters for Mortal Kombat 1. However, they were not completely removed from the final version of the game. Instead, they will be introduced as downloadable content (DLC) in the upcoming Kombat Pack 1.
The undead warrior, Ermac, will not be playable in Mortal Kombat 1 until the first wave of DLC is released. However, a modder has managed to add him to the roster prior to its official inclusion. Ermac was originally introduced in 1995's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as a minion of Shao Khan, created from the souls of individuals who perished in Outworld's wars. In Mortal Kombat 1, he has a similar backstory, being created by Quan Chi from the spirits of the Living Forrest to aid him and Shang Tsung in their quest to conquer Outworld and regain their previous power in the Mortal Kombat timeline.
Due to the fact that Ermac was announced as a DLC character to be added after the game's release, fans were surprised to see him play such a significant role in Mortal Kombat 1's storyline – to the extent that players actually fight him on multiple occasions. Ermac arguably has a more prominent role than many of the main fighters in Mortal Kombat 1, which has caused some concern that both he and the equally important Quan Chi were intentionally omitted from the initial game to be sold as DLC. Fortunately, a skilled modder has determined that this is not the case.
This modder, known as ermaccer on Twitter and YouTube, recently showcased the workings of Ermac's character model from Mortal Kombat 1. By adding Ermac to the game's playable roster through a non-playable mod, he revealed that the moveset for Ermac is not yet complete. Currently, Ermac's moveset combines some of Shang Tsung's attacks with those of Noob Saibot from Mortal Kombat 11, excluding his signature slam attack and basic green fireball projectile. As a result, Ermac does not possess any Fatalities or Brutalities.
Notably, Ermac is not the only significant character from Mortal Kombat 1 that is missing from the game's primary roster. Shang Tsung was exclusively offered as a pre-order bonus, and Quan Chi will be included in the upcoming Kombat Pack 1 DLC. Additionally, the post-release content will introduce Takeda, a ninja warrior-in-training, and three guest characters: Homelander from The Boys, Omni-Man from Invincible, and Peacemaker, the DC antihero who recently gained popularity through his HBO Max TV series.
It remains unclear why Ermac and Quan Chi were not originally included as playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1, despite their significant roles in the single-player story campaign. However, fans can be reassured that they were not removed from the final game. A recent mod by Twitter user ermaccer showcases Ermac's potential gameplay in the Kombat Pack 1 DLC, offering an entertaining glimpse into how he may be integrated into the game. It is expected that Ermac will have a distinct set of attacks compared to his appearances in story mode. Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
