Highlights
A never-released beta build of Grand Theft Auto Online was recently unearthed by a devoted fan, shedding light on some intriguing features that were ultimately removed by Rockstar from the final version of the game. These included an elaborately designed Wasted screen and occasional occurrences of "special crates" being dropped.
In the beta version of GTA Online, there was a distinct user interface and the option to request gang reinforcements, which were ultimately removed in the final version. Additionally, the beta build allowed for five character slots, whereas the current version only provides two, resulting in disappointment among fans seeking greater character customization. Rumors suggest that Rockstar may consider readdressing removed content in their future games, potentially including GTA 6 set to be released in 2024.
A curious fan recently stumbled upon a previously unreleased beta version of Grand Theft Auto Online, dating back almost ten years. Through this discovery, they uncovered several features that were ultimately removed by Rockstar. This is the second significant leak related to the popular game to emerge in recent months, coming shortly after an insider revealed the release date of a recent GTA Online update.
On October 1, Grand Theft Auto Online will reach its ten-year anniversary and still boasts a devoted fan base. The multiplayer element of GTA 5 initially debuted a few weeks after the single-player game, as Rockstar required extra time to address glitches and finalize the content for its launch.
A decade later, YouTube user KimiSha19 made a surprising discovery - a way to access the original version of GTA Online that was hidden within the initial release of GTA 5. This version had never been officially released but was always a part of the game's original build. Using the Xbox 360 emulator, Xenia, KimiSha19 found a method to manipulate the game version and gain access to the pre-release online multiplayer mode. This sparked the interest of another GTA enthusiast, BakeWithMe1000 from the GTA Forums, who eagerly explored this never-before-seen version of GTA Online to compare it with the final product.
Although this newly unearthed beta version of GTA Online had its flaws, such as missing mechanics and bugs that made it nearly unplayable, it also contained intriguing features that never made it into the finished game. One notable addition was a detailed "Wasted" screen that provided information about the weapon used by the player's killer, as well as the location of the fatal shots and head-to-head statistics against the assailant. Another abandoned feature was the periodic appearance of "special crates," although their contents and purpose remain unclear. Additionally, the user interface (UI) of GTA Online looked distinctly different in the beta version, and players had the option to call upon gang members such as Edgar Carlos, Al Carter, or Lamar for backup.
One notable difference between GTA Online and its recently revealed beta version is the number of character slots available. The beta version offered five slots, while the current version only has two. Some fans expressed their disappointment with Rockstar for not adding more character creation slots, especially considering the inclusion of numerous unnecessary features in GTA Online over the years.
Although much of the cut content has likely been abandoned, there is a possibility that Rockstar may revisit some of these ideas in a future game. This opportunity is expected to arise with the release of GTA 6, rumored to be aiming for a 2024 launch.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
