Sony explains that the KOTOR remake trailer was made private due to expired licenses.

The development problems regarding the KOTOR remake sparked speculation about its possible cancellation. However, fans will probably have to endure a prolonged wait due to substantial delays and shifts in the project's direction.

Sony stated that the Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic remake trailer was made private due to expired licenses. However, this explanation did not offer much comfort, especially considering that the announcement tweet from PlayStation was deleted at the same time. The KOTOR remake was expected to be one of the first Star Wars games not controlled by Electronic Arts in over ten years, as their exclusivity contract was ending. Aspyr, known for porting games to various platforms, including the original KOTOR and its sequel, was given the opportunity to remake this beloved RPG. Unfortunately, reports surfaced last year of directors being terminated after presenting a vertical slice, resulting in a pause in development. Despite a lack of updates on the remake, Aspyr's owner, Embracer Group, announced earlier this year that the company would undergo restructuring due to the failure of a $2 billion deal. Given these challenges, the decision to hide the KOTOR remake trailer understandably led many to believe that the project may be canceled.

According to Stephen Totilo, a video game reporter at Axios, Sony claims that they take down assets with licensed music when the licenses expire. This raises the question of why a music license would expire for an upcoming game. There have been no updates on this matter so far.

While the remake is not confirmed to be cancelled, fans should not expect it anytime soon. Saber Interactive has taken full control of the project after the departure of several directors from Aspyr. Since Aspyr only managed to create a small portion of the game, it is unlikely that the KOTOR remake will be released for several years, if at all. However, stakeholders are currently showing interest in keeping the project alive.

Besides the KOTOR remake, there are two other Star Wars video game projects in progress. Quantic Dream is working on Star Wars Eclipse, which is anticipated to be a narrative adventure with choices, similar to previous David Cage titles. However, the release date for Eclipse is not expected until 2027. On the other hand, Ubisoft is developing Star Wars Outlaws, which seems to be in a more advanced stage of development and was revealed during the Ubisoft Forward presentation in the summer.

The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is currently being developed for PC and PS5.
