A new clip has been unveiled for the upcoming anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, scheduled to be streamed on Netflix starting from November 17th. The clip made its debut at the Drop 01 event held last Wednesday and was subsequently uploaded to Netflix's official YouTube channel. This marks the first official release of a clip from the anime, apart from the teaser trailer that was released approximately a month ago.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is based on the acclaimed Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley, which also served as the inspiration for the highly popular 2010 live-action film titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Since then, there has been limited new content within the Scott Pilgrim franchise, with the exception of a video game bearing the same name. However, hints have been alluded since 2020 by the director and co-writer of the live-action movie, Edgar Wright.
The Scott Pilgrim franchise chronicles the life of a young adult in his twenties residing in Toronto. It delves into his daily struggles of maintaining employment and his apartment, all while combating his seven malevolent former girlfriends, who seem to appear at the most inconvenient times. Additionally, he harbors a strong infatuation for a local girl and strives to make progress with her, despite constant interference from his exes. Both the graphic novel and live-action film adaptations boast a dedicated fan base and receive outstanding ratings.
The latest clip unveils the moment when Scott discovers the identity of his newfound love interest, Ramona Flowers. Upon realizing that she works as a DVD delivery person for Netflix, a nostalgic touch, he hurries home to rent a movie. In a clever homage to one of the iconic scenes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott eagerly waits by the door immediately after placing the order, even though several days have elapsed. This captivating clip appeals to newcomers by piquing their interest in the anime, while simultaneously thrilling existing fans with a fresh take on one of their beloved scenes.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the first animated installment in the series, features the return of most of the original cast from the live action movie to voice their characters. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Ellen Wong reprise their roles as Scott, Ramona Flowers, and Knives Chau, respectively. The animation is being handled by Japanese studio Science SARU, known for their work on DEVILMAN crybaby and The Heike Story. Directing the project is Abel Góngora, who previously directed the episode "TO-B1" in Star Wars: Visions, another successful venture transforming live action into anime.
Bryan Lee O'Malley, the creator of Scott Pilgrim, has emphasized the influence of manga on his original work. He even contributed cover art for the March 2008 issue of Viz's Shojo Beat magazine, along with an art tutorial and a 4-panel comic. While Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could have been animated by a Western studio, the decision to turn it into an anime by a Japanese studio adds an interesting dynamic. Hopefully, the series can achieve the same level of success as the rest of the franchise.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will air on Netflix from November 17, 2023.
